If we want more HD channels then we need to support the technology. $4.99 extra is not that much.

Whether people get the EMAIL or not (I myself have yet to get one) some but not all are really going to really pitch a bitch about the price increase should it come to current subscribers...You are going to see lots of CSR's giving away 6 months to possibly a years worth of the HD extra package for free due to the complaints...after all the argument" Its only an extra 4.99" can cut both ways...When I am told by 3 different Direct CSR's that no additional charge will be added nor will I loose any channels if I keep my current package then I intend to hold Direct to their word....I am waiting till December 16th to see what happens....

Am I seeing this correctly? There is the HD Package that they USED to charge $4.99 for ... and then it became $9.99 ...?? and now it's going to be $15.00 ???

COMCAST just raised their rates by 5% ... Guess D* felt like they could easliy follow suit. These TV companies are a Monopoly just like the Gas Companies - they're all in it together to rip off the consumers and outsource their staff.

It's not about the money, but about promises not kept, and about losing access to channels we previously had for the same money (ok, it is a LITTLE bit about the money). It's not that I can't afford the extra $5, but I feel this will set a president that D* will be finding ways to tier off programing for additilonal fees. They may "give" us a couple of more HD channels I may or may not care about, and then take away other channels I care a whole LOT about. I seriously think the next thing that will be tiered off will be your local RSNs, similar to what a LOT of cable systems do.

Cable companies have been doing that for years. I suspect That is one of the reasons many of us went to Satellite TV.

Back when I had cable, I had everything. Then they started doing their tricks. I dropped a premium everytime they did their stunts and always ended up paying less. Eventually I was down to Basic cable and realized i wasn't missing anything important. I've still got basic cable and it is prettymuch only locals. I keep it so I can tune the HD locals and the subchanels that are not on Satellite. In My area as I understand it neither D* or E* has all the locals in HD nor the subchannels.

I actually went a little bit back to the dark side side and added a cable box and a on demand channel that is a monthly fee. Sad to say the image quality on that channel is variable. The DVR type functions are slow to respond. As best I can tell when I hit ff then play the functions are being done at the cable company office and that communication delay causes the unresponsiveness. Howver since it is the only way to get the content..... And since I'm feeding it through the DVD recorder I tried recording it and it seems to work which surprised me somewhat.

This sounds more like Time-Warner cable. That is why I dropped them in 2002. They raising rates and cutting services.

What about the technology we have been supporting this WHOLE TIME at $10.00 a month? The very limited amount of HD channels. We have been supporting the technology, and I believe the right thing to do is reward those that have been doing so.

That's one of the arguments for full ala carte pricing. Why should I pay for ESPNHD when I don't watch it?

the HD Extra is an optional package and the reason for that is those channels do not have a stadard def. version that is included with any base package.

Are they really going to charge us? It says $0.00/3 months free,
shouldn't it say $4.99/3 months free.
It says if I select this,
it is only $0.00 a month! And I get 3 months free!
I am just trying to think positive here;)

Does anybody's account say $4.99/3 months free?

Since you don't watch any of the good channels ;) , I suggest not paying the $10 HD fee, and just paying the $5 HD fee for the boring/snoring ;) HD channels. That way you save $5 :eek2: and we don't have to hear your whining anymore. :hurah:

Wow, thanks for the review on my selections. Not surprisingly, your analysis is wrong though as you have to have the $10 package in order to buy the $5 package.

Here's a hint...ignore my posts and you won't be bothered.

+1  I have already signed up. 3 months free then $4.99. If you don't want to pay the $4.99, don't sign up. That part is very simple.
What I don't like about having to pay is that D used a "backdoor" method to get around their promise not to raise HD prices. They can say they didn't raise any prices they added an additional package.

It's possible that D* did not customize the e-mail or address list for the mailing, but just sent out the same e-mail to anyone with HD. Previously I received e-mail telling me to make sure I had BBC modules connected, even though at the time I had a 3-LNB dish. If the CSR is telling you something different, I'd believe the CSR at this point.

I don't consider e-mail an official way to notify me of billing changes, and I doubt D* does either since it's not reliable enough. For example, I may never see it because it got filtered as spam. I would believe a notice printed on my bill. For now, I'm just going to wait and see what happens in December.
