I think that's the point, though, the question being: are they going to charge people $4.99 for a set of channels that their receivers can only get a portion of?

So now we have come the full circle. DIRECTV is taking lessons from COMCAST. Now we can raise rates TWICE a year and get away with it.
CFO MIKE PALKOVIC made the STATEMENT "WE WILL NOT RAISE OUR HD TV CHANNEL RATES".
We now know how long that has lasted. D10 is just getting settled in its orbit.

GUESS WHAT: Rate hike raise in DECEMBER for channels you have been getting for a year.

Guess what: another rate hike coming in Feb, Mar, Apr, sometime the first of the year.

Yes this is a COMCAST TACTIC. Raise rates and they will come.

So if the CFO lies, then guess what, the CSR's can lie to you to.

You can look at it or say it anyway you want: BUT IT IS STILL A RATE HIKE PERIOD.

YES CFO Mike Palkovic did make the statement "NO RATE HIKES FOR HD TV STATIONS"

Will this make me dump DirectV? No, but I will cut back on my programming and not add the extra fees for this HD EXTRA Pack.

I got my HR-20 last fall. No HD Locals available via sat so the ~10 national HDs were all I had from D* (the HR-20 did give me DVR capability for the OTA locals in HD). So I basically paid $10.00 per month for 10 HD channels.

A couple of months later they added my locals in HD; price stayed the same. Now paying $10.00 per month for about 14 HD channels via D*

Fast forward six or seven months and I'm up to ~70 HD channels. Still paying $10.00 per month.

Now D* announces that coming in December they're going to charge $5 per month more if I want to keep 6 of those HD channels.

E* charges $20 per month for significantly less HD and can't deliver my locals in HD.

I'm really have trouble getting in a lather over this "price increase". I'll probably subscribe to the new package and I'll still feel like I'm getting the best value out there for my HD dollar.

You know, it's a lot easier for a HD channel that is owned by a media giant to get started. Much more difficult for someone like Smithsonian, who probably doesn't have a whole bunch of HD content in their archives. I'm cutting them some slack, because at least they aren't trying to pass SD content off as HD like some of the others. I'll eagerly await more programming from them, as their pq is among the best I've seen.

    And the source is: www.tvpredictions.com

They are running the article today, that says everyone will get the increase and in the same breath, ''say this is not a rate increase according to DTV sources."

Well, I'm one Premier customer who won't really see this increase. I called, politely voiced my displeasure, and got 6 months of HD access credit to my account and 12 months of this new HD Pack credit. Twelve months from now I'll call back and see what else I can do. :)

I sent an email expressing my disgust ot this proposed increase ... as a Premier Customer... we'll see what they have to say ... But frankly, I'm more and more considering the big move when my contract expires...

Not that I disagree with price increases, or package changes. But, we have been paying $10 a month for a couple of years for a handful of HDs, which we were getting cheated on in my opinion! And now they finally start to beef up HD that we have been paying $10 for already for years? And then they add $5 for those, and there will be more that are put in that pack as they bring more online, just wait.

Where does it end, then? When D11 is launched early next year and they light up another 50 or more HD channels, will you approve of D* assessing yet another HD pack? Maybe they'll call that one "HD Extra Plus" or something.

This article does not state in anyway D* had previously stated they would not raise prices. Sorry I was not clear, I was looking for the source of your Palkovic quote.

I'm still bothered over the fact that some channels we already received for years, and paid $10 for, are being moved to an extra pack. Doesn't make sense...

In my conversation today with a retention rep, his explanation was: "We ended up with a few channels that couldn't be put into any specific channel package that we currently offer; therefore, we created the HD extra pack and put these channels in there so that our customers could have a choice."

Huh? You mean MTV's HD version couldn't be put into one of the Total Choice packages where its SD counterpart is? And what about MGM HD? It's all so stupid.

I had called D* about a programing change and while I had them on the phone asked the CSR about the $4.99 charge, this was several months ago when the announcement first came out. I was told it was only for new customers, and there would be no charge to existing customers. The next time I saw something on it, it was existing customers didn't have to pay "until December 15th".

Not a big deal to me, the programing is worth it, but my point was I was told, by a CSR, one thing, then saw something different at a later date.

I have received no such notice.

Two possible factors: I have a grandfathered service plan (Total Choice Plus), and I have a continuously-connected HR10-250. I recall hearing that the HR10-250 (legacy equipment) might qualify one for a longer grandfather period.

The HD Xtra Pack does not appear on my bill or my account, yet I receive the channels. Why shouldn't I wait until the last possible moment to claim "3 free months"? Or am I in those 3 months already and don't know it?

Swanni is a hopeless self-promoter without an ounce of credibility. He talks about himself in the third person! I don't care what he thinks.

Yes, but when OTA analog dies, D*s 1500 SD LiL feeds will lose their source. Either D* will downconvert the local HD signals or just give everyone an HD box. Then they could use 101 for two more HD sats.
