If you only want to encounter the truth, don't watch commercials or newscasts.
Hey, I enjoy a good zinger as much as the next guy, but up till now, all the DirecTV commercials have been more or less interpretations of the truth. However, this is the first to out and out lie. Maybe they meant to not run it untill the new satellite was operational, but until then, it is a blatant untruth.
I haven't paid close attention to the DIRECTV ads, but are you sure it didn't say "will soon have the capacity" instead of "now has the capacity" for 200 HD channels?
nope, the ones I saw were now, no way to misinterpret the ones I saw.
Hmm .. Looking at this list and if you just count absolutely everything (being very liberal here):
70 HD Networks
24 HD Full-time Regional Sport Networks (RSN's)
8 HD DNS Locals: CBS/NBC/ABC/FOX East&West
30 HD Cinema
6 MPEG2 HD Legacy Channels (duplicates) to be removed "soon" - 6 at 110°
9 HD Part-time RSN's
17 HD for NFL Sunday Ticket
30 HD for MLB Extra Innings
18 HD for NBA League Pass
16 HD for NHL Center Ice
6 HD for MLS Direct Kick
4 HD for NASCAR
2 HD for Cricket
Total == 240
Now, I'm not trying to claim this is the right way to even count it, but it is one way to count it. So, from an Advertising point of view .. perhaps saying they now have the capacity for 200 channels is not really wrong .. It's just misleading like most advertising.
very well could be that, thats why I was ignoring them until I saw this post and wanted to check
They definitely saw "now have the capacity". It is possible that this commercial is not running on normal TV yet as I have only seen it on the 101 (though it makes little sense to run it there) watching Dan Patrick in the background.
It keeps current customers up to date and let's them know what they have by subscibing. If they saw an ad for another company and said "hmm I wonder what we have" then saw that they would be satisfied.
I saw it recently too and it did say that they now have the capacity and I'm sure it wasn't on 101 because I don't watch it. I can't say I recall what channel it was on tho.
It keeps current customers up to date by telling them something that is not yet true?
Who's to say that it isn't true? DirecTV may very well have the CAPACITY for 200 HD channels if you count all the reserves they have on the Sats. Of course they wouldn't use all that capacity at this time since they wouldn't have any backups but they may have the capacity. They never claimed they were broadcasting 200 channels just that they had the potential.
I just saw it for the first time on ESPN.
The commercial states that "Dish is claiming they have more HD channels than DirecTV". So my expectation is good, they will tell us how many Dish has now and how many DirecTV has. But they don't. Instead they say DirecTV is a better choice for HD because:
- 25 Dish HD channels are part time
- DirecTV NOW has the capacity for over 200 HD channels, all High Def all the time
Says nothing about how many total HD channels either has today. But it puts a small number "25" by Dish and "200" by DirecTV. Guess they are counting on the viewer not really paying attention. I found it confusing and did not directly address Dish's claim of more HD channels than DirecTV today.
Yup, I think this is the bottom line point of that particular ad. It's along the same line as Comcast's 1000's of HD choices. Doesn't really mean much in real life. But the more I think about it, it's not really inaccurate. It just doesn't matter what the capacity is .. we are concerned with channels.
Now you've reminded me of that delightful little Comcast commercial that has been running lately. The one with the double-plan balance scale comparing Comcast and DirecTV HD offerings. Comcast always includes every single craptastic HD VOD title they have in their count. They also fail to mention that the vast majority of their markets still have a full slate of analog cable channels and a much lower HD channel count because of it.
Dish and DirecTV are saints compared to that devil of a company.
PLEASE STOP!!! The truth is that DirecTV, Dish, Comcast, ATT, Verizon, etc., all lie through their teeth about their HD offerings.
Either don't watch the commercials or simply recognize them for what they are.
Well, as long as you say so, I guess we will all stop having opinions that are counter to yours, troll.
well, looks like I totally misread scrybigtv's post here. Sorry about that scrybigtv. I am totally worng on this one then.
So agreeing with you makes me a troll? Might want to trying actually reading my post.
Yes, there's a huge difference between "I wouldn't count that channel but DirecTV would" and "only one city can get that channel, and they say everyone can."
Well, I read it the exact opposite. Sorry about that. I will edit my post.
It is funny if you re-read your post, it could go either way. I am so used to people constantly taking DirecTV side on everythign I jumped to a conclusion.
I do owe you an apology here.
