Yep, initial cost is why I initially signed with Primestar in 96 or 97, I just paid for the installation (I think it was $100 or $150), and the equipment rental was part of the monthly fee. We were worried that buying such expensive equipment that it might break ...

Let me tell you a little story from May 4, 1995. We really got tired of all the outages and bad channels on our our cable, so we decided to switch to a BUD. However, the first sales person sold us a bill of goods telling us that we could have multiple receivers in the house and be watching different channels. Well, we found out that was a sales pitch, so we just happened to receive in the mail a flyer on DirecTV. Called the company that was located about 250 miles away about the deal. I had a sales person the next day sign me up. What seemed to be a great deal in 1995 is a laugh to many people today. We ended up getting two receivers, the dish, a two year warranty, and one year of their Total Choice package. Adding in the installation cost of $250.00 and taxes, our total came to $2568.54. This doesn't count the $400.00 of damage the installers did to our walls in trying to feed the wire through the walls to the outlet. Our wall looked like swiss cheese and they still couldn't find a way down the wall without hitting a fire break. Plus the company wouldn't pay for the fix action. Just think of what we could buy in todays market for that amount of money!!!
