There's a box that's defaulted to Professional install. I was able to select self install. However, this was not for an HR34 as I can't order one. I believe those they don't let you self install when ordering from DirecTV.

Hmm i went thru the order process and didnt see that box defaulted to professional install. Let me look again. It used to be u culd order over the phone and roulette and the right rep would "trick" the computer system into just shipping one out without having to do the install but not now i called a few times and the last woman told me they programmed the computers to stop letting reps do that.

EDIT: Nope online not like that anymore u cant remove professional installation

I just tried and had the option to choose Professional or self install. You may not see the option if your setup isn't flagged as SWiM in their system. They are moving everyone to SWiM and if you're not in their system as SWiM they require an installer.

We've been told that they have been added to the not recoverable list. However I won't say that you won't get one. You cold end up with an HR21 and wish you got a 20 :)

At this point i'll take anything except an hr20-700 b/c mine isnt working properly (signal strengths) with my new SWM setup. I've tried every troubleshoot there is and narrowed the issue to being with the hr20-700

If you go to www.SolidSignal.com you can order the model HD DVR you want. Better than rolling the dice with DirecTV to see what model number they send you.

You've narrowed it down to yours. Others have one with no problem, and it doesn't need a special config like the -100.

Well i'm not using DECA so if ur talking about the b band stoppers i wouldnt need to add that on to the 100 (i dont think)

Just curious if anyone has ordered one of these from Directv and what model did you receive? I had a HR34 installed last week and when the tech was here he swapped my HR20's out for HR24's. I have one R22 left and would like to get that replaced with a HR24 as well. I am eligible for the free upgrade but only want to do if I receive a HR24. Can anyone comment to what i might expect?

Your best bet is to get an HR24 from solidsignal.com and then call DirecTV and ask if you can get credits to offset the cost. Many people have posted here saying they have been able to do just that.

Well I just received a free HR34 and received two new HR24's so I am not going to push my luck. When i logged in to pay my bill i saw i was eligible for another HD-dvr for free. If i could be assured of getting another HR24 i was going to pull the trigger. I don't need another HR21,22 as the R22 is in HD mode and that is what i already have, i just love the speed of the HR24 and thought it would make a nice match to rest of my equipment. Its for my kids room so i don't think they would ever notice. :)

Well I think you could take a chance and see. It costs 20 bucks shipping to try. I did, my plan was to replace an h21, and I ended up with an hr21-700. I don't mind, it cost me 20 dollars to replace a receiver and a raffle ticket to get a 24

When I did it thru DirecTv.com I paid $20 for shipping and got free instal. I am hoping that since a tech is bringing me the HD DVR that I stand a better chance of getting an HR24 than if I just had them FedEx me one.

Yeah, having a Tech bring the gear definitely increases your chances of getting an HR24. I didn't think of that previously when I suggested solidsignal.com.
