CNN is reporting a drug overdose. (Live TV no link yet.)

    From the NY Post:

    http://nypost.com/2014/02/02/philip-seymour-hoffman-found-dead-in-his-apartment/

Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose — in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm — inside a Greenwich Village home on Sunday morning, cops said.

A personal assistant found Hoffman’s body in an apartment at 35 Bethune St. and called 911 around 11:30 a.m, sources said.

Cops are at the scene and are investigating, sources said.

I think for a lot of people, he almost came out of nowhere in 2005 when he did Capote.

He's been around a lot longer than that.

He was a notable supporting actor in Scent of a Woman and Boogie Nights.

One of my favorites as well.

It is interesting to note that IMDB already has his DOD in his bio.

I'm not saying he wasn't around a lot longer, but seems a lot of movie watchers really started noticing him at that point.

A hobby of mine now is that whenever I see someone in a TV rerun who used to appear often and whose name I never knew but whom I hadn't seen in years, maybe 3/4s of the time I learn that they died young. The three most common causes of actors dying before their time are - in no particular order - respiratory system related failure (bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer) suicide and heart failure. The higher than normal incidence of lung problems can probably be attributed to the fact that most Hollywood types were chain smokers in the 1950s and 1960s, and the high incidence of suicides is something that I had always suspected though admittedly, if anyone had asked me a decade ago to name some actors and actresses who committed suicide, my list would have been of the same handful that all the rest of you would have come up with, but Wikipedia lists a few hundred, and heart failure, which the Los Angeles coroner does not attribute to the recreational or psychedelic drug that most likely brought it on.

IMDB lists Mocking Jay Part 1 as Post-Production, but Part 2 as Filming. I hope they got all his parts shot.

My favorite movie of his was State & Main. It was an odd film, but very funny.

He has had a pretty good career. For me, I'll remember him best for not only his role in 'Pirate Radio' and 'Boogie Nights'

Rest in Peace Phillip and thank you for sharing your talent with us.
