I was told by a CSR today that they are going to be grouping the channels together that offer the same type programing like movie channels, comedy channels, etc. that is why those channels in the 500's are moving.

"The Playboy Subscription channel will move to 559 on 8/15."

That's one way to fill a hole. Pun intended.

Except playboy doesn't fit (that's what she said) with the rest of the 500s. Playboy should stay with the smut channels where it is.

That's a horrible location for Playboy. I thought they were going to group like channels together. ie) Movies.

I wonder how much Playboy is paying DirecTV for a lower channel number. Maybe putting the adult search front and center in the menu was so successful in generating additional revenue that they will put the adult channels front and center.

It's actually a higher number. Playboy probably thinks it is classier than the pure smut channels in the 400s.

Playboy is a premium network service on many MVPDs. SNL Kagan, in fact, considers it a premium just like HBO, Showtime, etc.

I hope this is just a channel change (which is bad enough).

Its not like Playboy is going to be part of say the Premiere package with this move is it?

That is, it still requires a separate monthly subscription?

Maybe Playboy is suffering from the classic Network Decay. Like how MTV isn't music videos, History isn't really history, TLC doesn't teach you anything, and Bravo has nothing to do with theater and the arts anymore. Maybe Playboy is decaying from porn and more of a mix of Esquire, Wealth TV, HBO after dark specials and Cinemax late night flix.

There is a slate 598-1 stating "Playboy Subscription on 559 as of 8/15". As for its schedule, one can just look at the EPG on channel 598.

Seems like a lousy location to place this channel; between Sundance and IFC. It also places it two channels away from family oriented Hallmark Movie Channel and three from children oriented (most of the day) HDnet Movies. Again, this channel can be blocked from EPG, but someone at DirecTV certainly isn't taking this into consideration.

In any case, we did not get a new movie channel, but it looks like Adult Channels may be going between Sundance and IFC.

At least this ends the debate of adding IndiePlex, MoviePlex, Epix1 - 3, Epix Drive-In, et. al.

As for grouping movie channels, somehow Ovation, AMC, TCM, FX and FXM, next to Playboy, does not sound like a good move either. This is not proposed, but the majority of their programming are movies.

As for organizing the programming by genre, that is long in coming. The way programming is scattered between 200 and 400 could be improved upon. .

Didn't DirecTV group channels by theme in the very early days of the service? I seem to recall a lot of grumbling back then over the slow degeneration of their "system". But even then, there were holdouts like CNN and HLN in the 200s and not work the other news channels.

With the prevalence of user favorite lists and DVR use I don't really get the purpose of channel shuffling anymore.

I concur. When there is some newsworthy events happening, I like to have all of the News channels close together, so you can compare perspective. CNN and Headline News, should be next to FOX News and MSNBC. I hate having to punch in their current channel number, every time I want to go next door and see what people are saying. You'd think CNN would want to be close to the news leader, FOX News, so people could compare their analysis on events transpiring.

I really don't like throwing adult channels down there. I wish D* would reconsider.

I have no problem with the channels being offered, but it's like porn shops. Just put them where my family doesn't see them.

You will NEVER see any porn channel become part of the Premier or any base package lol. Porn channels will always be separate. Only thing I guess could eventually be added to Premier would be the HD Extra channels

That was not the question. What I was asking, particularly of those who have had DirecTV for many years, was if Playboy TV was ever in Premier. DISH had it in their top package a decade ago (by request but no extra cost). I wondered if DirecTV had it as well.

As far as "porn" goes, it is one of the cleaner channels. I'm sure one could find something just as offensive on skin-a-max (or is that sin-a-max?) late at night. HD Net (now AXS) once had fairly risque programming on their schedule. PlayboyTV is more of a general entertainment adult programming channel than 90 minute blocks of XX+ content.

I do not expect it to appear in Premier now as DirecTV and Playboy are making money off of the additional monthly subscriptions and PPV. But it is a more mainstream channel and I would not be surprised to find out that it had been in Premier in the past.

It's still a lot of extra button pushing to get all the channels set versus just hitting the guide button and similar channels already being right there next to each other, a click or two away in the guide.

Playboy was never in the Premier pack.

The DVR fee used to be included in the Premier pack years ago
