First off, I'm fully aware that this info isn't specific to DirecTV. The generic programming section doesn't appear to have a good place for this kind of post.

In the past I've been involved in many discussions about the value of the provided programming as well as technical discussions about how the combination of DVR and satellite could be far more efficient. I thought it would be useful to collect some statistics on the premium networks to assist my evaluation of value.

I provide the data here and make no further comment. I had to make them txt files so upload would work.

    The fields are as follows:

    1 - Year
    2 - Month
    3 - Channel
    4 - Channel ID
5 - Total number of minutes processed from guide
6 - Number of minutes marked FIRST RUN
7 - Number of minutes marked REPEAT
8 - Number of minutes of HD
9 - Number of minutes of SD
10 - Number of minutes of programs that are < 50 minutes long
11 - Number of minutes of programs that are >= 50 minutes and < 70 long
12 - Number of minutes of programs that are >= 70 minutes long

A moderate degree of effort has been put into developing the tools that analyze the guide data so I have a moderate level of confidence in the results. Being a professional software developer for 30+ years I claim a reasonable level of testing and data validation. This is not to say that it is guaranteed accurate or perfect. I was a bit surprised at the amount of first run programming, mostly less than 3%, but it appears to be accurate. Of course this is only as good as the guide data.

Try printing these to a PDF file. This showed up as a super long line of info when I opened the first one.
I then chose word wrap and it changed it but it does not look good and is basically undecipherable.

If you do not have it, there is a Free program called PDF Creator. It creates a virtual printer and you work it exactly like a printer except you save the file. It is then opened with the Adobe reader.

Edit / Add. If you filed it as a .csv it would open in a spread sheet and possibly what you intended..

I believe he is saying the site won't let him upload as a .csv. Save the file, then open it in Excel, or any other spreadsheet program.

Yes, it is a cvs file but I couldn't upload it that way.

Hrm, I wonder how far back 'first run' goes though, because the intial run date of a movie is listed in the info on the guide data. That's the only thing I'd be worried about. You could have a movie that is airing for the first time on HBO in a year, but originally was done in 2001. Not sure how that correlates?

There is a year in some entries but it doesn't look very reliable. I will look into making a histogram by age. It will make one feel even more fleeced.

I wanted to post as cvs so people could do their own interpretation - like calculating %. Too many possibilities to keep everyone happy.

Here is a zip of directory containing raw csv files for guide data for each month from September 2013 through August 2014. HD only.

    DTV_Guide_201309-201408.zip (15MB)

    Each file has the format
    channel,id,start,stop,duration,episode,episode-code,format,run,year,title

    For example,
    501,HBOHD,201309010800,201309011015,135,0,MV00385865.0000,HD,REPEAT,2012,"The Bourne Legacy"

Feel free to process as you like. Please share any useful insights.
