I had to use the protection plan a couple weeks ago when one 622 had to be replaced. Interesting coincidence that today's bill has a $1 increase in the cost of the protection plan. Maybe I missed the announcement but it sure seems odd. I thought it was only insurance companies that raised your rate as soon as you filed a claim. But then I guess the protection plan is a form of insurance.

Fri the 13th was the day of the increase and it had nothing to do with filing a claim.

    Great...
How long do you have to keep it and not get dinged?

I've never kept the protection on my account. If I need service that require payment, the Dish rep always tell me to sign up for protection plan which makes the service call free. I just had to agree to keep it for 4 months.(or is it 6 months?)

Too bad health and auto insurance companies don't operate that way. :)

You obviously haven't hear about the (un)Affordable Care Act.

wait... the Affordable Care Act covers Dish Network? How does that work? Do I get a tax credit to be applied on my monthly Dish bill? I'll vote for any politician(Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Klingon, Vulcan or whatever) who passes such laws. On second thought... maybe not.

The Protection Plan did increase by a $1 and the new requirement time to keep it is 6 months.

The cost to have a technician come out has lowered from $15 to $10. If there are any questions please PM me with the phone and 4 digit PIN number and issue(s) to better help.

    Thanks

what is the rationale for Dish to allows customers to sign up for protection in the same months that need service?

With the new 180 day requirement it is cheaper to pay the early termination fee instead of the $48 for 6mo.

It's a loophole. Apparently nobody considered how people might abuse the protection plan... and for the most part they haven't ever truly plugged that loophole.

The monthly fee is $8 per month. Last I was aware, the penalty for early-termination (i.e. earlier than 180 days) is $25.00

So... IF 6 months (180 days) would cost you $48.00... One month would only cost you $33... two months would only cost you $41.... so you could still add the plan for the month that you need it and drop it and pay less than it would cost to have it for 6 months.

That said... once you have a problem, you might want to consider that the fix might not be a complete fix... it seems to me that it would be worth having the protection for 6 months in case you need someone to come back out and tweak something else within that period after the initial fix.

If memory is correct DISH warranties a service call for 60 days so if they didn't correct it on the first try you still get free service on the same problem.

Can someone explain this to me?

If I drop my protection plan, and I have a receiver that needs to be replaced, would I be charged? Or does my protection plan just really cover a service call?

Guess the question is.. would I pay for a new Hopper is one needed to be replaced?

    Thanks!!!!!

Most DISH receivers are leased so DISH owns them under the lease they will be replaced so the protection plan is not needed on leased receivers. Service calls on other components or installation would be covered by protection plan, some fees may apply but it will be cheaper than without protection plan.

Actually it would be less than $33 because the protection plan is pro-rated, if you keep it a week you only pay ~$2 for it.

I'd start it with the call to Dish, set up the visit for ASAP and then immediately cancel after the repair is done, probably costs you ~$27 or so.
