I have HR 24 but I record a lot and I am thinking about buying an external hard drive.
Question is once I unplug the external hard drive, can I access its content if I hook it to my computer?

And keep in mind, currently, if your DVR goes bad and needs replaced, the recordings on the external will not be playable on the replacement DVR, unless they were OTA recordings through an AM21.

The recordings are encrypted to the the DVR that made the recordings. so without the original DVR, those recordings are useless.

    On a long...
You're saying even if you replace with the same receiver, the ext HDD recordings are useless?

NOt quite. while you can copy content from one drive to another to be in the SAME receiver works fine, it is a tedious process. however, you cannot copy content from one drive to another and use the copied drive in another DVR

same goes for aligning dishes. it is tedious for the uninitiated, but very easy for the pros.
