Im Moving service to another state and Directv said they can upgrade my HR24 for the Genie free of charge for the movers deal. Here are some questions I have:

    1. I am moving from California to Ohio and really want to hook up an antenna. I have an AM21 currently. I was wondering, if I buy an antenna (I'll link it in at the bottom) will the directv installer hook it up? It mounts right on the Sat dish.

2, If i do get the antenna hooked up, and use the AM21 on the Genie, will I need an Am21 in every room, or does the genie get the locals to the other receivers?

    3. I have an HR24 and it works pretty flawlessly. Is the Genie similar? Is there a big lag time when changing channels?

Any advice you can give would be appreciated. Just want to at least have locals when it storming out every other day. Thanks!

    1. A nice tip for the installer should help, but officially it's not something they do.

    2. Yes, only one AM21 is needed. Other Receivers/DVRs will be able to view off-air channels recorded on the Genie DVR.

    3. There's still some lag. HR44 Genie is faster than the original HR34 Genie. Most installers no longer have the HR34s.

To watch Live OTA on every DVR, you ned one AM21 per DVR. How ever if you record any program AT the genie, you can then watch them at the other DVR via WHDVR

You are not clear on whether you plan to keep the HR24 and add the Genie in addition, or otherwise. How many total receivers/DVRs do you have now, and how many do you plan to have after the move and upgrade?

If they are offering you a Genie and one or more mini clients in place of the HR24, I would keep the HR24 at one of your TV locations (and take one less client).

If you have a Genie with an AM21, and one or more clients (C31 or C41), I believe they can view the OTA channels directly (via the Genie), live or recorded (someone please correct me if this is wrong). However, if you keep the HR24 and/or any other regular DVRs or receivers, they will only be able to watch recordings from the Genies AM21. If you need OTA at every TV location and keep one or more non-Genie DVRs/receivers, then you would need an AM21 at each location you want OTA.

The Genie can stream a maximum of 3 shows to other units at any given time. That can be 3 recordings, 3 live shows, or a mix. However, the AM21 only has 2 tuners, so a maximum of 2 OTA shows can be watched and/or recorded at any one time even though the Genie has 5 satellite tuners.

There are many threads here about the pros and cons of clients versus receivers versus DVRs. You might want to do a bit of reading before making a final decision on what equipment you select.

That antenna doesn't mount to the satellite dish. It does mount to the same type of mount a dish uses, which means a second mount. It would also require a separate feed run. Not too likely a DirecTV installer would do this for you, even with a tip, though I suppose you could ask.

FWIW, I have an AM21 connected to my HR44 and it works fine. Love the '44, the faster response is great, and I never seem to run out of hard drive space.

I have 3 total receivers now. One HR24 and 2 D10's. It will still be 3 receivers afterward as well. I would love to keep the HR24 if possible, but its not a must. I would love to be able to watch live OTA on each receiver with the genie and the clients if I didnt need an AM21 in each room.

I'll try the tip for the installer. Good idea!

No need for correction, you are spot on! But to add, Since the TS is thinking on 1 Genie and two minis, only two locations can watch OTA since the AM21 has only two tuners

Not likely for a “tip” but more likely for a “fee"
