I recently rented a new house (moving in tomorrow) that has a DirecTV dish already installed by the previous owner of the home. My brother is giving me an old DirecTV receiver and card that was given to him by a friend so I don't have to lease eqipment. There isn't anything owed on the card/receiver.
My question is, since I'll have my own equipment already, when I call to sign up for service, will I still have to go through a credit check? From my divorce and bad decisions a few years ago, I don't have good credit. I'm in the process of repairing it, but it takes time.
Also, will I be commited to 2 years of service with them even though I'm not leasing equipment? If so, it's not really a big deal, but I would rather have the freedom of no commitment in case I don't like the service.

You should own the equipment and I would guess there should be no service commitment as you're only activating service, you are not taking advantage of any "special equipment offer". As far as credit goes, they may want you to pay a month in advance, but other than that, I wouldn't expect problems. Many of us have made those divorce mistakes.
With all that said, the first 1-2 folks you talk to (CSRs) at DTV will probably give you a different story. They may say you're going to have to lease your brother's equipment from DTV. I know, strange. But if this occurs, ask to speak with their supervisor.
The dish is there, you have the equipment, all you're expecting is for DTV to turn on service. Which is where the advance pay thingy may come in.
Let us know what you run into. In particular, what they tell you about leasing.
I would think at most they may require you to buy a new card, maybe dependent on how old the card is that you got from your friend. The rest you may need to press on, as Wolffpack said.
If you are setting up a new account they are not supposed to set it up with used equipment, NEW equipment only. You can add used equipment after the account is active. Let us know what the results are.
If they want you to buy a new access card, tell them again...it was your brothers card and he gave it to you. If they still have a stick up their butt about it, hang up and try again. You don't have an account yet so they cannot track what previous CSRs have told you. At this point your playing the very well known game of DTV CSR roulette. AKA you get a different answer every time you ask the same question.
I've purchased 2 DTivo units with access cards over eBay and the CSRs I spoke with had no problem, didn't ask a question about activating those cards previously owned by others on my account.
As wolffpack said, if the reply you get does not make sense hang up and try again. It is the nature of the beast with DirecTV sometimes.
Do post back to say how things went...and good luck!
