Thanks everyone for your help :) I'm going to seriously consider the PP.

To address the allegation of slow speeds...

The TiVo was capable of seeing one or two satellites and decoding MPEG-2, which is by nature quicker to start because of its lower compression level. The new device has to listen to potentially six satellites and decode both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.

I have no doubt that in a true apples-to-apples comparison, the HR24 would be faster, but there's no way to do such a comparison.

I agree with the last post. We had a freak wind come through here a year ago that tore 33 solar photovoltaic panels off my roof and sent them up over the house and deposited them on my driveway. My dish never moved! I can't imagine being in a wind condition much worse than that, so I am pretty comfortable that my dish is mounted securely. I have never had the PP, and never really had the need for one, so after 10 years or so, I figure I am money ahead.

Your choice of the protection plan is really your decision... personally I think that for the average user the peace of mind is probably worth it.

The HRxx's have always been slow to change channels. As a matter of fact, after every software "version", it gets slower and slower.
