For future reference, read the manual before doing something that could possibly do something like wipe a hard drive.

    http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/article.jsp?assetId=P5980155

I suppose they can add a footnote to say that if you have content from one of their competitors on the drive it won't work. But that oughta be painfully obviously after reading that paragraph... if you can't port the drive between DirecTV receivers you certainly can't port it between Dish and DirecTV receivers.

That's not normal... have you called them about this? Sounds like a bad drive/receiver.

We've all probably done something like this in our storied history with computers/consumer electronics (done something in haste and lost everything). The title of the OP's message really should read, "I'm really upset with myself", as D* has nothing to do with it. Live and learn, just like the rest of us.:)

OP should have been prepared that Direct would want to setup the Drive its way. Even with the way Dish does it, you can't share the drive with a different OS.

Not sure "if" thats the reason they charge, but when you enable 1 ViP DVR, it enables all DVR's on your account, even if you add more down the road for just the 1 time fee. You can have as many EHD's as you want to as well.

With Dish it actually does ask you 1st, when you connect the EHD to the ViP DVR. I have no idea if he was used to moving it between ViP's, but for those that do move a EHD(s) you can kind of get used to just hooking it up, and not having it reformat. I have a ViP up north that I activate only when I go there, and take shows I want to catch up on, in the evening after fishing or hunting all day. Each family member has there own EHD as well, to save off shows and Series that are important to them as well.

That means "pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others". And I gotta agree. I got a real chuckle out of this. And RichieRich and I have both used it several times in the past. Cruel, but apt.

Grumpy, portability is between ViP receivers on the same account. A home code is sent to the ViP DVR's enabling the feature basically marrying the EHDD to the serial numbers of the receivers on the account. If you take the EHDD out of that 'Restrictive Calling Circle' your out of luck.

Yes it is a one time fee for all ViP DVR's on your account. Adding an EHDD to a 211K to make it a DVR is a different scenario and set of fees.

I actually already knew what it meant but it seems too heavy for simply laughung at something I consider to be funny. I am not glad it happened and I don't get any type of pleasure out if it. I mostly was laughing at the OP's 2nd post. He went from being mad at D* to having to admit it was his fault. The reaon it struck such a chord is because I have done similar things in different situations. :roundandr

    And your point being????
I was only talking about ViP DVR's, never mentioned the 211. Even adding EHD to the 211, Dish doesn't consider it a DVR.

So when you talk about ViP DVR's thats really only 612/622/722. All EHD's can move from any ViP DVR on your account, just like I said in the 1st post, 2nd post was a response, to somebody having a question about the 1st post, were all that was covered, minus the 211, as with or without a EHD, Dish doesn't count it as a DVR, nor do you pay the DVR fee for it. In my case, I have a 622 and a 722 here in Carlsbad, and a 612(owned) at my parents house that I activate, for hunting and fishing trips, both at the house, and at the campsite, all on my Account, just like I said the requirement was. ViP DVR's on your account.

That is very weird. I've never seen a hard drive reformat itself.

Steveknj, your may want to start a thread to try to troubleshoot. That is definitely not supposed to happen.

Moving an external drive from one DISH Network HD DVR to another DISH Network HD DVR on the same account is fully supported and the results are as the OP expected.

Regrettably, this element of external hard drive support is not available in the DIRECTV world.

Very regrettable for those of us poor saps saddled with the horrendous DirecTV service, huh?

We'll muddle through though. Thanks for your concern, as always. Send sympathy cards, it'll make us feel better.

That is certainly true but even if we had the ability to transfer drives between DirecTV receivers the OP would still have lost all his stuff from Dish.
