Thanks.... I just tuned to it.... I had never heard of "DREAM TV" from Egypt... Had to go to Wikipedia to find out if it was an Egyptian State Channel... It is not.... It is Egypt's first Private TV Network and it began operations in November 2001....It is owned by an Egyptian businessman...

However, given that Egypt is not a democracy I doubt whether this news channel really has the same news coverage independence (from the Egyptian government) as BBC World News-Arabic or Al Jazeera....

However, it's a welcome addition just to see how an Egyptian-based and owned news channel covers the crisis--- with or without government shutdown fears...

The SD picture is in 16:9 SD within a 4:3 frame... The SD quality is very good; just like BBC World News-Arabic....

    I just read this

"Al Jazeera [English] saw its Web traffic increase by some 2,500% on Jan. 28, even before the most dramatic escalation of the situation [in Egypt]. About half that traffic has been coming from the U.S."

I saw this morning ALJAZEERA criticize the US for abandoning Mubarak too fast, this is after they spent a week criticizing the US for not abandoning Mubarak fast enough. :eek2:

That's what you get from non-propaganda sources: differences of opinion. There are differences of opinion from within our own government about how far to go, whether it is outright support, facing the inevitable, or hedging the bet.

The coverage has been outstanding on AJE. What is lost in all this (and AJE has commented on it), is who will put Humpty Dumpty back together again, should a change in Egyptian government take place.

    Revolution is a slippery slope.

I do not want to discuss or hijack the thread to examine the pros and cons of a fall of the Egyptian government, as that is wholly outside dbstalk's purview, and is more appropriately discussed on political boards.

It remains, however, the 500 lb gorilla in the room, and I'm sure there are many hotbeds of discussion on other boards, where it is appropriate.

I've been watching a lot of LinkTV, which has some AJE coverage, plus Democracy Now (a discussion show), as well as streaming AJE LIve to my computer and Ipod Touch. Fascinating stuff, filled with the anxiety of uncertainty for what is to come.

It has been said that democracy is a messy proposition. Getting one started is one of the messiest. Making one work ain't no bed of roses either.:)

Please don't judge America based on Bill Maher. It is like judging the Muslim world on Bin Laden.

BTW: The "who will rebuild Egypt" question has been asked on other news channels. AJE can't have the answer, and the other networks don't either. It is their job to watch and report (as all are doing) not to influence the process.

Yea, since they only have one news network, they have to play like Fox in the morning, and MSNBC at night :) Actually, most of what I have seen this week has been protesters opinions from both sides. I haven't really seen any reporters that work for AJE take a side (on the news shows, anyway. I haven't watched any of the Opinion segments this week).

I see AJE as the Fox News of the Arab world. Twisting enough facts just to stir up the pot. We don't need them over here. We already have Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh.

Who will rebuild Egypt? If all this anti-american feeling is true that we see on AJE, then we should take our billion and a half dollars worth of aid we give them every year and let them pound sand. That money could be used for education and jobs in this country.

I'm not judging America based on Bill Maher, I'm judging American humor based on what I read. It was funny, and typical of our acerbic style.

I don't expect them (AJE or anyone else) to have an answer....no one has one. That's the problem with change of this nature. Did I somehow imply that they were supposed to influence? You seemed to have jumped to some wild conclusions, that are not supported by anything I said. Also, you don't write their job descriptions, and are apparently unaware that all news agencies do commentary as well as straight reporting.

BTW, please don't put words in my mouth...that's my job. I made no attempt to judge America, and I don't appreciate you implying that I did.

I haven't seen any anti-American feeling this week on AJE. What have you been watching?

I must have missed it, because I've been watching for it, and found just the opposite. I watched several guests make excuses for why we our government didn't take a stronger stand with the protesters. I, myself, don't think we should be doing any such thing. Speaking out in favor of democratic principles is one thing, taking sides is very risky, and tends to remind the people of those countries just how much we have interfered with their internal processes in the past.

Please, bring your proof that AJE is twisting the facts. I'm most interested, because I must have missed it, and I don't like missing stuff like that.

By saying Bill's humor was typically "American" and backing it up in a second post YOU ARE judging America.

I'm pretty sure you didn't write AJE's job descriptions either, so why don't you cut the crap and talk about the channel and we can get away from off topic comments.

American humor is typically acerbic, and quite clever. Stop misrepresenting or mis-characterizing what I said to suit your own agenda. It's unbecoming.

So, from your point of view, you can make any unsupportable statement you like, and if you are called on it, that becomes off topic. Convenient, so I'll let it die there.

News is not channel discussion ... news moved to a new thread for discussion (within the rules of the forum).
