i recently signed up for the whole house DVR genie. install went in on Sunday. after the install, i was told the guide and other items were still being downloaded cuz' i asked why the guide seemed very sluggish.

so i did some investiagting and noticed i got a H34 reciever, but i noticed there's a new/faster H44 reciever thats been available since March. why did i not get the newer reciever? i'd obviously much prefer the newer reciever since it's has a faster chip.

question is, should i contact DTV and complain about not recieving the newest reciever they carry? and ask them to replace my reciever with the H44?

    thanks in advance.

DirecTV considers the HR34 and HR44 Genie DVRs as "functionally equivalent", so you get whatever is on the installer's truck. Calling DirecTV won't help because the CSRs can't guarantee a specific model either. The only way to that is to order it yourself from a dealer, like Solid Signal.

    thanks for the reply.

that's unfortuante. i'm just really disappointed in how sluggish the guide is with this reciever.

do you know if there's a big difference between the H34 & H44 in regards to processing speeds?

Give it a few days to settle down. There's a lot of background processing that happens during the first few days after installation. That said, the HR44 is generally acknowledged to be speedier than the HR34. Only you can decided if it's worth the hassle of trying to get DirecTV to replace yours, especially since their own systems make it pretty much impossible.

john what part of socal do you live in? I want to go back to directv and get the newer hr 44,The installer i spoke with is out of silver lakes (helendale) out here in the high desert, i live in apple valley and he told me they pretty much just install the newr genie hr44. If they send me the hr 34 i'll refuse it and wait for the hr 44.

i'll give it a chance. just really bummed that they'd install an "older" reciever for a new customer.

i'm in Chino HIlls. good luck and keep me posted how it goes.

The HR34 may be older but it's hardly old. I have one and the speed difference between the HR34 & the HR44 is apparent when they're side by side. But, the HR34 is seriously faster than any of the HR2x DVRs.

Given the choice I'd take the HR44 but is all I could get was an HR34 I'd be just as happy. :)

    My 4.8ยข FWIW.

FYI, the thread starter is referring to the HR34 and HR44 DVRs.
We really need to watch that the model numbers are correct.

the 34 is a piece of junk!

I never noticed till i added a client to it. Installing 44's all day and coming home to my 34 was driving me nuts.

I setup and service call and had the tech claim my dvr bad, he gave me a 44 and all is well now! Also i got a free hr24 add on and he swapped a couple old 21'sj to 25's for me. Super happy now!

I would consider the 34 to be "broken" unless you have HDs connected, it was "ok" when i didnt have clients connected.

    *UPDATE*

so i recently added international programming. so they schedule an install date for the international dish. during the call, i complained about not getting the newest reciever on a new install. especially since the new reciever has been out since March/April, if not earlier. spoke to a supervisor and i was told nothing coudl be done as boxes are installed based on what's in the warehouse at the time. he ends telling me to he'd give me a $100 credit to order my own H44 from Solid Signal. So i took it!lol

but while the tech was doing his install, i got to talking to him about my disappointment in getting a H34 on a new install a few weeks back. so tells me..."oh, i've got a ton of H44's in the van...i'll switch it out for you. no prob!" haha.....this was even before i could ask him!!

at the end, things worked out better than i could have expected!lol

    Great! And welcome to DBSTalk!

I presume you've contacted DIRECTV to have them deduct the $100 credit...

I hope that you returned the "favor" by means of a gratuity for the installer.

i tried handing him a 50 and he wouldn't take it. so i signed up for the "protection plan" since he gets credit. the least i can do.

Unless you really wanted the protection plan, you would have saved money if he had taken the $50.
