I think I didn't give enough credit, you're right. its probably about 50/50 skill and luck.

now, if the whole notion of a 'scrolled list' had not been invented (this was pre-xerox PARC, say) then yes, it would be pure genius to have the scrolled lists and such. but these are COMMON gui themes. there isn't a huge amount that I consider truly visionary in tivo's ui - other than the fact that its been pretty polished over the years and is mostly pretty consistent. there are some real design changes _I_ would make (some foreground/background detachment that would speed things up, a more asynch model would help, too). so I still think its part luck (they got some good people but also lucked into keeping things somewhat simple. an arbitrary decision that easily could have gone another direction, so I chalk it up partially to fate or luck).

you'd have thought that the risk/benefit analysis would have shown them that paying tivo's 'ransom' (so to speak) would still have been the prudent move. OR, work with tivo but in parallel develop your own dvr. but do NOT release that private one until the cake is fully baked! sheesh. not a hard concept to understand. but I bet the dollars were all that mattered here. typical american/western notion of the short-term money over long-term customer retention.

a friend of mine seems think the coding is ALL offshored. I would believe that. I've personally had my silicon valley job offshored. its VERY common now. in fact, I wonder if there are going to be many americans DOING software for big companies, say over the next 10 or so years. I seriously wonder if america will become a 'service only' industry, losing its IP skills.

I wonder if we would all have Tivo Series 3 boxes if they kept them on board. I have the option of FIOS with TIVO but the monthly fees and prices for the boxes are a real turnoff.

I recorded "Grease your the one that I want" Sunday Jan 7 on kare-11 minneapolis HD local and the recording showed 1hr 30 min recorded, but wouldn't play or ffwd.

From what I read in the paper, the show stinks anyway... so I guess it's no big loss... but frustrating anyway!

this began happening to mine yesterday for the very first time!!! not that i don't have plenty of other issues to address, the least of which is a missing tuner....but i digress........i've made no changes since santa came, but just began experiencing this problem yesterday. along with it came a major issue with any directional commands - lockup of screen anywhere from 1-15 seconds on any attempt to ff or rew.

I guess this is my first bug. Had the unit for a week. Tried to record a show on Discovery HD and I instantly get the Keep or Delete message when I play it back.

No big loss because it is being repeated today. But I hope this isn't a harbinger of things to come (on something that won't be repeated).

I've only had this happen 2 times. If you do a RBR, once you're back up you should be able to see the recorded show. Both times I've done this, the recorded show has played back perfectly.

Now this is getting annoying. I tried to record the show again (Bugs--A Rainforest Adventure on Discovery HD). Again, the same thing happened. It won't play back. It shows the Keep or Delete message.

I did the RBR and it didn't help at all--now the show isn't even on the list of recorded programs. I've recorded other shows from Discovery HD so it's not the channel.

Does the show have a copy protection flag or something?

I'm on firmware 10B, if that matters.

I have 10B also. I had the same thing happen to me on Discovery HD....keep or delete. Also the remote freeze issue. Got my unit 1/4/07 in exchange for the HR10-250, I definatly miss the DLB's. I have been considering getting a series 3 HD TiVo and or moving over to FiOS....anyone else consider that move?

Third tmie's the charm. I manually recorded it the last time it aired and it recorded fine.

I've had one other bug since then, I turned off the unit for the night. When I turned it on in the morning, it wouldn't display any picture at all. I had to RBR to get it to work.
