Why do you think you are limited to 10 one hour shows? If you have it set to keep all it will keep all 24 as long as you have space on your hard drive. Even the smallest hard drive in a DirecTV HD-DVR can keep around 50 hours of HD shows.

Also, just so you know, if a recording overlaps on the same tuner it really only records that overlapping time to the hard drive once. The file system will just reference that section of the hard drive for both recordings. For example if you extend The Good Wife by one hour, and the Mentalist by one hour you will really only end up taking up 3 hours worth of space on your hard drive. That second hour of The Good Wife, and first hour of the Mantalist will both refer to the same 1 hours worth of space on the hard drive.

So to me I would set both The Good Wife, and The Mentalist to recor 1 hour past their normal end time. That way as long as the game doesn't go over by more than one hour you should have the entire The Good Wife episode recorded within the 2 hour recording that is labelled The Good Wife in your DVR list. And you will have the entire The Mentalist episode within the 2 Hour recording labelled The Mentailist, but you will really only be taking up 3 hours worth of space on the hard drive just like if you had only extended The Mentalist. But this way you dont' have to worry about keeping around The Mentalist recording to watch the second half of The Good Wife, if you end up watching The Mentalist first.

    EDIT/
OK I just looked at your post again and I think I have figured out what you are trying to say, but you have it worded pretty strangely. I think you are trying to say you can keep 24 one hour long episodes for up to 10 different TV shows. Or 24 one hour episodes of 9 different TV shows, and 24 episodes of 2 differnet half hour TV shows, or 24 episodes of 8 different one hour TV shows and 24 episodes of 4 different half hour TV shows, etc. All adding up to a total of 240 hours worth of programming (which I think is about accurate for the Genie isn't it?).

    Beerstalker you would do the
Good Wife by one hour, and the Mentalist by one hour you will really only end up taking up 3 hours worth of space on your hard drive. That second hour of The Good Wife, and first hour of the Mantalist will both refer to the same 1 hours worth of space on the hard drive.

Extend both shows 1 Hour each will it take up 4 hours of space

If kept 24 one hour long episodes for up to 10 different TV shows. from september til May will I run out of space ?

My hard drive is half the size of yours.
I currently have 5, 1 hour programs recorded, and 26 movies, one of which is Avatar that is 4 hours long and I still have 62% FREE SPACE on my hard drive.

No it won't. Like I said the DVR is smart enough to realize that you are asking it to record the same thing twice. So it doesn't actually write it to the hard drive twice, it only writes it once, but it tells both of your recordings to look at that same section on the hard drive. It will only take up 3 hours worth of space. If you delete one of the recordings it will only delete the one hour that is not part of the other recording, the hour that is part of both recordings will still be there until you delete the other recording.

Which DVR do you have? Do you have an external drive?

I think it goes something like this (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

    HR20 and HR21 hold 50 hours HD.

    HR22, HR23, HR24 hold 100 hours HD.

    HR34, HR44 hold 200 hours HD.

These are just general estimates, because of the way DirecTV adjusts the bandwidth of channels depending on what they are showing etc. it can effect how much you can record. For example if you record nothing but fast moving sports like hockey, football, basketball it will hold less than if you are recording a bunch of stuff like CNN or Fox News where there isn't as much moving around all the time.

The DVR will warn you when you are getting low on space, and there is a % free reading at the bottom of the page when you are looking at the recordings. If you start running out of space watch some stuff and delete it. Are you leaving the country or something for 6 months that you are so worried about running out of space? If that is the case they you may want to think about getting an external hard drive, with those you could add a ton of space so you don't have to worry about it.

you can literally put any size drive they currently make on that model for increased space. They come with a 1TB drive installed. There are members here using 3 or 4TB drives on their Genie's.
