Channel adding/not adding doesn't make sense if one looks only at bandwidth, or only at cost, or only at contract negotiations, or "popularity", or bundling, or tiering, or digital rights, etc.

In some cases it must work. With DirecTV...seemingly not so much.

Well, they aren't going to add it if the terms they have been offered aren't good enough just because people contact them.

Okay, put all those criteria together and explain why Shorts HD makes more sense than the channels I mentioned by name (they weren't accidental) or saving the bandwidth for the possibly of getting a more mainstream channel.

The person I responded to used bandwidth as a root cause for service providers not being able to add channels. I completely agree because things like bandwidth actually do matter when adding channels. That's why I'm wondering why DirecTV chose to add a new channel in HD rather than simulcast a similarly cheap channel they already carry; or, failing that, save the bandwidth for a time when they can/want to add a channel in greater demand

That is one of the possibilities.

The other possibility, DIRECTV is not interested in adding a particular channel. Desire comes before negotiation.

People have to realize, just because DIRECTV is missing a channel in HD, don’t automatically assume negotiations are underway.

Though many of those shows are no longer on BBCA, it would be much easier to justify getting it on HD if the channel had better ratings and frequent repeats of STNG and now Battlestar Galactica aren't helping it.

Personally I'm hoping that when we get an International Version of Iplayer it'll come in at a sensible monthly price and I won't care what happens with BBCA

If bandwidth on the sat is the issue, what about putting some of the good shows in HD via on demand?

Or what about a software update that if it detects your internet connection is capable, use it to stream an mpeg4/avc iptv version of the channel in higher quality than SD-lite? I have 12mbps, and you should be able to do it in at least 720p at about 6 or 7 mbps using vbr advanced video codecs.

But like others have said, how is bandwidth an issue if all of those sports packages were already allocated on D11? Are you saying that we will have to wait for D14 for new HD? Well I might as well suspend my service until then and get Cable if that's the case. I think I'll make that decision after I get to experience the new upcoming HD-UI to see if it's worth it.

First, I don't have access to internal decision making, or I can't divulge it if I did. Second, I don't believe any amount of carefully reasoned explanation will sway some folk. I'm not saying you're intransigent, but you're certainly firm in you opinion that DIRECTV is somehow doing it wrong.

I brought this up a while back when I saw that Reelz has HD on demand on fios even though the linear channel is SD only. I am sure this is because Fios has linear channel bandwidth issues.

Their IMG 1.9 software supports full IPTV via linear channel numbers (not just VOD). So it's expected that sooner or later, once IMG 1.9 is fully rolled out... the HD channel expansion will continue, via IPTV.

There are not any descriptions in the EPG. So how would you know what to watch?

Supposedly they are coming out with it later this year. I've already decided that when they do, I'll be dropping some of my DirecTV extras to pay for it starting with the HD Extra Pack.

Again....the hd extra pack can be had for free so no reason to drop it there.

I actually don't think so. I think they are going MPEG4 first. There has not been a sniff of what IPTV means for Fios, but MPEG4 is an easy switch.

Will that still work if you're grandfathered into a package and want to keep it that way. For example, I have Premiere with free DVR service. Could I risk losing that by switching back and forth?

You may need to contact a CSR, rather than doing it online, but you shouldn't lose anything.

I see members are saying that you can get the Extra Pack for free.

Isn't that only for a couple month trial or is it permanent ?

I would like to know because I am paying for it now. If it is permanent, how would I go about getting it for no charge?

So, has anyone really watched ShortsHD yet? If so, how much time have you spent watching it? I think I may be up to 1 minute 30 seconds total elapsed viewing time so far. The lack of a guide schedule makes it pretty unappealing to me.

Yup ShortsHD is boring. The HBO shorts were short. I remember in the 80's they showed a film called "Hardware Wars" a spoof of Star Wars. Funny!
