Just had another HR installed by Directv. Paid $99 for it and of course a new 2 year commitment. I looked at the back after the installer left and it clearly says "reconditioned" on the warranty seal. Also says HR20-100S. It looks new but I have a feeling I just got 2 year old parts.

That's common. It's all leased equipment, so you get what you get. The only way to ensure "new" is to buy it a a local retailer (Best Buy, etc). Even then it's leased, though. I have recieved a couple of reconditioned receivers, and my HR20 refurb is the most stable box I have. The "100" is the manufacturer and the "S" is for silver, as in color.

Nothing to worry about, you're leasing it, it dies you get another one.

Exactly. My oldest box is an R15 I've had for almost 4 years and it was a refurb when I got it. Still works fine on my youngest daughter's TV. My HR2x boxes were all new when I got them but if they weren't I wouldn't care. I don't "own" them anyway so as long as they work it doesn't matter to me.

I was also a little peeved that for my $99 I didn't get the bigger hard drive of the newer model. Or the shiny black finish.

Do you use OTA? Since the HR20 has built-in OTA tuners, they were probably trying to accomodate you. DirecTV has gotten better with providing HR20's to subscribers that use OTA. It doesn't always happen, but it is possible.

And the built in OTA has made the hr20's a higher demand in some cases than the "newer models" since they require an additional box to do OTA....

You only paid $99, they could have charged you the full price...many of us here would kill to always get HR20's...

No, don't be mad. HR20s are solid boxes, and chances are you got a new hard drive in yours. Plus you have OTA tuners built.
Sit back and enjoy your TV.

I agree with all the posters above. You got a good leased unit there.

I've been using a refurb HR20-700 for two years (original got zapped by lightning). Works just fine.
