Right now FSTV and GEB are both reading as 720P on my HD DVR (HR21-200) at the moment; :)

Anyhow, from their launch months ago I originally thought this myself, that for whatever reason these stations or maybe DirecTV is sending up-converted 4:3 material in an HD format. But others here at the time, more in the know than me :), insisted it was a coding error and the channels are assuredly in SD.

But I actually agree with you that these channels are indeed being transmitted in an HD format as my DVR is set to native with all resolutions checked and its definitely outputting a 16:9 720P signal to my HD set.

Now why either party would do this and why DirecTV would waste precious bandwidth on them is unknown AFAIK, and very stupid IMO ...

Waste of bandwidth indeed! Can anyone analyze the steam and confirm the bitrate? Is it actually utilizing the same bitrate as an HD channel?

Question, what is moving GTV from 1060 to 1b10 accomplish. Is that because it's not really HD so they don't want to give it the same 'slot' number as usual HD programs?

Don't take the numbers (1070/1700/etc) as a something with dedicated bandwidth - it's just a PID.
Bandwidth could be dynamically allocated or not to the PID.

Yeah I'm getting it too and I don't even have an engineering card. Why's it on 65 (I thought 2-69 is supposed to be locals) instead of 651-1 like the description says. Also why does it say "Upcoming Colorado @ Missouri"?????

I noticed that GTV shows up in "postage stamp" on my SDTV in my office. I have that junk filtered out of the guide up in the living room. But yeah, the postage stamp (black borders around all sides) is just like an HD channel showing SD content would look on that SDTV. I checked the format button and that's how it looked in Original Format (Screen format unaltered).

I think GEB was like that too, but when I stretched it to fit, the brightness really changed as well (Got darker when stretched). That was the only channel that did that.

So anyway, nice to see they are getting that new 3D network. I don't have a 3DTV, but that doesn't mean that some day I won't. We'll see how that tech pans out. Thanks for the update!

The Atlanta area still has a channel 69. (It may not be on that frequency OTA, but it is still called 69 and displays on that channel on DirecTV.

Actually physical channels are 2-51 and virtual channels are still 2-69. There's a (virtual) channel 66 (WSMH) here which D* carries.

Should have specified... High power digitals are 2-59. Some preexisting low power analogs (which probably would not be carried by D*) are still occupying that band for the time being. Im not sure of the exact change in the FCC rules, but no new licenses are being issued up there.

I see be the above post they took away 52-59 now, so its pretty fluid.

No, physical digital channels are only on 2-51 and have been since the transition back in 2009. Low power analogs can use 52-69 though.
