Hey Earl, Did you ever find out WHY the OTA is not active? There has to be a reason, right? I have two HR-20s and switching between imputs to watch the OTA stuff is kinda trying...plus not being able to record network shows really blows. I will never have locals on my D*, so OTA tuner activation would help a lot!!( I say that hoping D* will feel my pain and speed up the process!) Thanks Earl!

I would guess they couldn't get it fully working with the software, and feeling the heat for their lack of hd services and fearing it might begin to hurt their bottom line, decided they better get the thing out as soon as they could, provided most features worked.

What is the current software version anyway. I picked up an HR-20 at BB last night and when I set it up, it grabbed version 00Bsomething-or-other

I assume there must be a reason. Why would they say Oct if there wasn't one. If it was that they have an issue and they are working on a software issue you would think they wouldn't have a time frame like Oct. I figured they be working as fast as they can to get that out. So I would think it was a marketing or legal issue if they have to wait till Oct. A software issue seems to me like it would have gotten fixed already.

That's the same thing mine said. How do I check to see what version I have?

00BE is the version during download and 0xBE will show under Settings->Setup->Info & Test. When you press select on Info and Test the information on the right side will populate and at the bottom of the screen will be the Version number.

    They are the same software.

Earl....do you know if the "MPEG 4 choppy and jittery image on 1080i resolution" is on the blocks to be addressed with this next release? As you know, this is a problem that is affecting BOTH H20 and HR20 receivers in most markets that have local HD channels in MPEG4.

I have the HR20...football season is here....no OTA on HR20....my Dolphins play on CBS....CBS in MPEG4 looks like crap right now...frustration. :(

There will be some MPEG-4 improvements with the next release, however...

Part of the MPEG-4 issue has nothing to do with the software on the H20 or the HR20.... It has to do on the reception/encoding end of the things.

DirecTV is in the process of updating their receiving equipment (what is used to get the signal from the affiliates), and the equipment/software used to encode that signal to MPEG-4

I know Chicago was just done in the last week or so.
They are doing this accross all their centers.

Just bought my receiver from BB. There was a sticker on it saying OTA would be active in late 2006.

    Earl:

First of all, I want to thank you for shedding light on the MPEG4 issue....every time I call DirecTV they act like they have never heard of the problem before....everywhere else I look people seem to be blaming the receivers....at least I now know where the real problem lies.

The obvious next question is....to the best of your knowledge, when can you guess DirecTV will be done doing these upgrades to their receiving and encoding equipment throughout the country? Also, since they are already done in Chicago....are there noticeable improvements? Also, how about the local sports via RSN?

Sorry, don't know of the order of the upgrades... I was just told Chicago was completed recently.

I will see if I can get some more details next week...

As for picture improvement.... I never really noticed a difference between my OTA and my MPEG-4.... (via the H20).... I don't have many picture issues with my MPEG-4 feeds though.

As for NY.... how about NY goes last for once ? :D
I will try to find out what the schedule looks like.

I've dealt with the MPEG4 encoding problems for well over 8 months now on my H20. I think we deserve to get it fixed soon :p
