Oh, I admitted to that years ago and posted that admission. I also had twelve TiVos running when I began to switch over to the HRs. I also had twelve VCRs running before I switched to D* and found DVRs. So, yeah, I do have a problem. :)

Thank you, thank you very much. (That's my Elvis impression, loses something when written.)

You might consider that 4 DVRs is excessive. You might also go back in my posts and see how many failed HRs I've had. That said, I agree, with MRV I have found the number of HRs I have to be excessive. Now tell me how to get rid of them.

To a person with 1 HD DVR...2 HD DVRs might seem excessive...it's all relative... :D

    Speaking of relatives... :eek2:

Absent being able to have long-term backups of recorded content, don't you agree that it is good not to put all one's eggs in a single basket?

Actually I have six 20-700s that I use for back up. You might trust them, I clearly don't. And as for being able to afford them, that's not an issue.

Those six 20-700s are the 20-700s that I purchased myself and stuck at least 1.5TB HDDs in. Don't really know exactly how much they ultimately cost, but it was in excess of $2,000. When I say I'm sick of replacements that have been allegedly been refurbished, I put my money where my mouth is.

I think what D* does with replacements is unconscionable. Most of their customer's clearly have no clue that there are better HRs than the ones they have, it's only on forums such as this one that the knowledge base exists that even allows us to compare them.

I never questioned your ability to afford to do this, nor did I assume you couldn't. All I know is that in 4 years, our family has had 5 DVRs, 4 of which were very reliable (1 was DOA on install). No need for 6 back ups.

I'd love to have 12 HD-DVRS. I record the whole of TV-dom. But I would NOT love the cost for each DVR.

The other option is to increase confusion across the board by telling everyone that they posess inferior "top-of-the-line" models (even though the model, "DIRECTV PlusĀ® HD DVR", is exactly the same).

That's not going to work and it certainly isn't going to make everyone cheer. When all is said and done and most the bugs are ameliorated, I'm inclined to think that the HR24 is going to be an incremental improvement.

I didn't mean to say that you had said anything about affording the amount of HRs I have, sorry if it came out that way.

Consider yourself lucky. I've had over...well you know. I missed another two that I use for backup, so the actual total is eight. They don't all have the same programs on them, they are not mirrored as far as programming goes. I did state that I clearly have too many HRs and I will be getting rid of some of them.

If you mean the monthly cost, I think that is only $55. And, aside from the ones that I bought on eBay or CL, I didn't pay much for the rest. Several were without cost (got my 24-500 at no cost, for instance) or at a very low cost, usually $99. And I got credits for them, so...

But it's too many. I think I can get it down to 8 or 9 and will do so soon. I did get a little carried away. :)

I think I'll just keep my 20-700s since I don't want anymore eSATAs. Perhaps buy a couple more owned 20-700s and go with them until they go south. Then, who knows? :)
