SONICblue, TiVo Press Claims as Lawsuit Threatened

    TiVo and SONICblue Inc. on Tuesday pressed their claims for technologies covering the fundamental operation of digital video recorders, with SONICblue threatening to sue its rival unless licensing talks produce a breakthrough.

    Meanwhile, San Jose, California-based TiVo said it had received two new patents covering fundamental DVR operations.

    ...One of the patents is for ``TrickPlay,'' or the use of VCR functions like pause, rewind and fast-forward on live television, the company said. The other covers a method for connecting its DVRs and other streaming media devices to a network in the home...

    ...One analyst said it was conceivable the two sides could end up cross-licensing technology to each other, creating a ''win-win'' situation as the overall market grows.
