The first rep I talked to said the same thing. And having gone through the Versus channel debacle, as you did, I was gonna actually pull the trigger and switch to Dish. I get every Bears game and don't really need the Sunday Ticket even though it would be nice. But I would love to have the Redzone Channel. So when I called to cancel(my current 2 year contract ends in a week) I was given the Redzone channel free until 10/31. At no time did I say I wanted it for free. I was more than willing to pay for it, just not the whole ST. She said, of course we offer it as a stand alone channel. And she had no idea why another rep would say otherwise.

I'm still wondering why she said it was the whole season yet it ends on 10/31.

I am guessing that they aren't going to respond with information regarding what the qualifications are for as long as it is being given out in this manner. A DirecTV employee on the other forum already addressed the issue with about as much information as anyone here is likely to get: LINK

Yea, I am not sure what to expect. That guys response was not helpful at all, he should have just not even said anything. What threw me for a loop was when I started seeing people who had never had ST get offered Red Zone Channel. If it was always offered to people that had previously had ST, then I could understand a little more.

Ultimately, I wonder why they created this stand alone offer just to be used for retention? Why not offer it to everyone like other providers do since it is obvious they can separate it. (And yes I understand that the DirecTV RZC is different)

Its easy to understand why the don't offer it as a standalone. The sucking noise from the NFL ST sales would, deafen the CSR's. To many people would jump on a $7 package offer vs a $300 offer.
Sounds like if your under contract and/or never had NFL ST. Don't count on getting Standalone Redzone, even if you threaten to leave.

I still don't see how if DirecTV offered a RZC only package that people would be dropping ST in droves? I mean the target market for ST is the displaced fan, the one who doesn't live in his teams home market. That person is going to do whatever they can to get NFL Sunday Ticket. RZC has never been more than "fluff" to sell the SuperFan add-on, but now that other providers are offering it, IMO DirecTV should as well.

I really think that by next season DirecTV will have a RZC only package....perhaps they are using this season to see how the demand is without advertising it?

Oh and BTW I am still under contract but was able to have Stand Alone RZC added to my account :D

As I've said numerous times, only people who sub to NFLST for one channel, RZC, would be wanting to drop ST for RZC. Nobody wants to pay $300 for one channel. Or even $180. It's absurd, perhaps even patently so.

Simply put, RZC would only kill NFLST sub rates if everyone who was an NFLST only did it for RZC. Just look at the NFLST threads here. Many fans don't even understand the appeal of RZC and never watch it as an NFLST sub. They are just football fans, either the entire NFL or their own team, such as an out of market team. Or they love fantasy. And things like Short Cuts and the Game Mix.

So IMHO publicly offering RZC only is not going to have people dropping NFLST in droves for the RZC only package.

So all you did is Drop ST, and ask Nicely for RZC? Or did you have to threaten to leave as well? There are lots of NFL ST people who just like to get all the games.

I have several friends that have Direct, diehard Charger fans, they get those games locally, don't need NFL ST, but they enjoyed watching the other games as well, and used RZC to keep track of all the games that weren't Charger games.
All of them(6 total, 2 last year and 4 this yr.) have dropped NFL ST, tired of spending the money, and having to jump through hoops to get any break. All would have dropped NFL ST last year just for RZC. Sorry NFL ST would hear a huge sucking sound in lost viewers who would be just as happy to have the Multi-sports Package with RZC for le $7 a month, about $35, grand total, vs the standard, non begging, trying to find the right CSR price of $300 total. Plus they will be spending the $35 anyways, as they all just like me carry the Multi-Sports package for the College football season. Sorry offering to many users a RZC option competing directly against NFL ST. NFL ST would see a big drop in Sub's.

As $335 vs $35 is a big difference.

Hello, I,ve been a DTV subscriber since 1996(Pegasus at that time)I have subscribed to Sunday Ticket and CenterIce since 1996. This year however I doubt I will be able to afford the +$300 for Sunday Ticket. After reading several Forums online it is my understanding others have rec'vd The RedZone channel for free this year. I would appreciate very much being included in this group. Please let me know if you would do this for me. I have included 2 snapshots showing the RedZone channel option on others staements.

Thats the same form letter I got. It ticked me off so bad, I called to cancel/suspend for the football season. I discovered the secret password to get them to let me have it. Include the password "Comcast" in your request, as in, switching to. After two weeks of arguing with CSRs about this, the retention department took less than 30 seconds to add it to my account when I called to suspend it.

    UPDATE TO PREVIOUS POST:
After writing back in response to DTV's email to me, I got this 2nd email from them, I paraphrased it for this Forum:
    "07/28/2010 03:20 AM

Thanks for writing back. I sincerely understand the importance of getting the programming you prefer and I am very sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you.

As mentioned in the previous email we sent you, the Red Zone Channel is available from DIRECTV as part of NFL SUNDAY TICKET.

While other providers are now offering The Red Zone Channel from The NFL Network, they will not be able to offer coverage of all NFL games in their entirety. The Red Zone Channel from the NFL Network will only show highlights of games and will only be available in select programming packages.

DIRECTV is the only place to enjoy NFL SUNDAY TICKET and watch your favorite NFL team, no matter where you live. You get up to 14 games each Sunday. And only DIRECTV can give you great features such as live streaming to your cell phone or computer with NFL To-Go.

NFL Sunday Ticket is still exclusive to DIRECTV - not available anywhere else! It's the only way to watch your favorite out-of-market team every Sunday.

    Sincerely,

They are saying it is only available with the FULL SundayTicket, yet others here know otherwise. Guess I 'll try other ways of doing this besides email.

I didn't flat out threaten to leave, but I did mention that in my particular situation, being in my teams home market, other providers that could provide me with NFL RedZone at a reasonable price were looking more enticing and that I seriously was considering changing but didn't want to as DirecTV gives me 99% of what I want in a provider. (Although Comcast just added 56 HD channels here recently and they have NFL RedZone in thier $4.99 sports tier, could have been enough to tip the scales for me come August)

As for your other point, I agree somewhat with you, but your friends were already leaving for whatever reasons....plenty more people are dropping NFL ST for tough financial times, not wanting to "stand with one arm in the air, one finger in your ear while turning in circles while on the phone with CS trying to get a deal" or just don't have time for all the games. So why not try and at least get $49.99 for the season out of them for RZC.

This season, ALOT of those who dropped NFL ST will be hanging out at friends houses who have FIOS, UVerse or Comcast and they will see NFL RedZone, ask thier friend how much they pay, then be sad because DirecTV holds that channel hostage for $300 (or $180 if you do the DTV Olympics as described above ) A few weeks of that and DirecTV could start losing some complete subscribers altogether. Perhaps this is why this "standalone RZC at no charge" was added to the system, they may be anticipating alot of calls come the beginning of the season for people jumping to other providers....

    Just my $.02

Main reason the rest dropped NFL ST this year, was the price, granted it came down some with HD and RZC being included instead of seperate.

Another reason the other 4 dropped this year, was last year, I hosted most of the football game parties last year, and using PiP with the main game on and having NFL RZ on at the sametime was a huge selling point in dropping NFL ST. I will be hosting more game Sunday's, this year on weekends with Key games, everybody will just come here. Works for me as now I can get an extra hr or so of sleep, as I don't have to make the Ribs early, pack them up and then drive to somebody's house. Plus long standing rule, the guests have to bring the beer. :D

You are another Typical Sub, and a great example of a Sub, that would drop NFL ST, if offered a chance to get RZC, and save a few hundred $$$$'s as you are in the home market, and RZC you get all the action plays. Once again if Direct published, and/or created a RZC that was included a sports package for $7 a month, NFL ST sub numbers would drop.

So I went the phone route, talked to a nice CSR and he put me on hold, asked his supervisor and then came back and said he added the RZC for free to my account. I am pleased with the result thanks to this Forum.:)

I am heavily slanted in favor of Sunday Ticket over the standalone Red Zone option. I live in the market of my team, but I also want to watch the games of our division rivals live. In addition to those, I will also flip over to other high profile games. When my team isn't playing, I want to pick and choose which game(s) I want to watch. I also flip back and forth between games constantly. I want to control which games I see and when, rather than relying on Red Zone. I guess you could say I make my own custom Red Zone.

I want the mix channel. I want to watch the Colts win, the Texans lose, the Titans lose, and the Jaguars lose miserably. In fact, nothing would make me happier than see every member of Jaguars roster run off the filed and hide under those huge tarps they use to cover all those empty seats.

Red Zone works for some, but not for me.

    That's a Man Law!

Agreed 100% with you. It's stupid, IMO, that they're even offering it the way they are now. If I was in charge, I'd offer RDZ...but for $100 minimum.

RDZ is great, don't get me wrong, but I need ST. I hate my local team (Dallas) & I follow 4 teams...Indy, ATL, Baltimore, & NYG. I'd see a good amount of Giants games & a few Colts ones without ST, but Ravens & Falcons never get love.

They really are stuck in a difficult position. Option 1: Offer RDZ separately and risk losing current and/or future ST revenue. Option 2: Don't offer RDZ separately and risk losing subscribers to other providers. Pick between the worst of the two evils.
