Is there any specific reason why E* can't just authorize the premium channels on their existing channels for eligable subscribers, like D* and pretty much every cable provider does for free previews?

They used to do that, this seems to be a new trend...

In the past Dish had free previews of "other" channels on a duplicate channel... but the premium previews were always on the real channel.

This, as already posted, is a new trend to do the premiums this way. I'm guessing they must see some advantage to doing the extra work. Personally, it seems like extra work on their part to duplicate and then authorize rather than just authorize.

Tier system probably doesn't allow that. There's probably a bit you can flip to override the normal authorization list and allow everyone access, but to assign a different authorization list while maintaining the normal one to return to, as would be necessary to exclude DishFamily and so on, is probably difficult or impossible, so they just create a new set of channels with different authorizations.

I blame the family pack. :D

In the past they could just drop the channels to 'free preview' but now that E* protects the Family Pack subscribers (and other non AT60 subscribers) from seeing free previews it makes it more complicated. I suppose they could move the channels TO the AT60 tier, but that would confuse any non-AT subscribers who have those channels (and they would lose the channels during the free preview).

I do wish they would activate the channels BEFORE the preview started, even if it was just a dish logo. The 9 day EPG doesn't load immediately when a channel is added so until one does a reset there is a lot of "no information" playing.

The Freebie channels were configured this week and are listed in the Uplink Activity thread.

I, for one, am unhappy with the new practice of running free previews on special channels. While it used to be very easy to record movies during these previews, it is now complicated and difficult. (But I suppose I should not complain...)

Why do you say it is so difficult? I have all movie channels, so I don't bother with the free weekends, but I was just curious. Also, I like the fact that when there is a free weekend now there isn't a scrolling bar every 15 mins that tells me to sign up for the channel (even though I already pay for it). So I guess I like the new method.

You can still record those movies on the DVD-Recorder.

It is more difficult because TiVo provides no guide data for the special channels.

Whereas before I could easily record a bunch of movies almost totally automatically, now I am reduced to scouring forums to get the channel numbers, searching through program guides manually to get the times, lengths, and channels, and then programming each one in manually.

    Hope this satisfies your curiosity.

Somehow I don't believe cooperating with Tivo is high on E*'s priority list.

As a subscriber of the premium channels who hates having to watch the advertising during the free previews when I'm already paying for the channels, I hope you don't mind that I don't have a lot of sympathy for your plight and am very glad the free preview is on different channels.

Of course I don't mind! As I said, not complaining, just answering the question posed.

I was under the impression the channels were mirrors.

If so, how does that help with advertising?

If not, how the heck are they finding the transponder space these days?

    Amen Nick!

Personally I don't want a credit for 2 days worth of programming, I just want the channel to be normal. No moron coming in between every movie saying 'If Your enjoying this free preview, call your cable or satellite provider now', no phone numbers or other obstructions flashing during movies.

If the channel can't be normal during the free preview, then yes, an invoice credit would be nice, since I can't watch the premium content I pay for in the same way.

I just went and checked... but the EPG dies after a couple of hours and I haven't been able to force my 501 receiver to get a new version. Tried the checkswitch trick and everything, but no go... or I'd be busy checking to see if I wanted to record anything.
