If DirecTV put in every option suggested on this site, the options screen would be 50 pages long. While I do agree that it should be an option, given the fact that it's won't be an option, I think they should just leave it alone.

It must be cool to never accidentally press the up button when you meant to press down, or vice-versa.

It's just a little visual aid, people. We need to be thinking of the other more major bugs before we bitch about the little things.

The feature is there, just not for the consumer version. :)

Although there are certainly bigger bugs (e.g. missing recordings, partials, lockups), this one is very high up on my list of big problems with this unit. Perhaps 0xEB will improve things, but if I am at the top entry on the guide and I press the up arrow (not page up) it takes at least 5 seconds for it to scroll up to the next entry. I find this hugely annoying. I can understand a few 100 milliseconds for a scroll animation, but for it to take 5 seconds just to scroll up one entry is just painful. I don't remember my DirecTivo having animations and I was never 'confused' as to which direction I had scrolled. I'd take speed over animations any day.

0xeb does not help. The guid is still painful and slow.

I like this idea a lot.

I am going to post it over at the Wishlist thread and ask that Doug add it:

Please add this feature to the wishlist:
The option to turn off Guide/List/Menu Animation for better Ease of Use

    Reasons:
-Animation is what makes the Guide and MyVOD (MyPlaylist) seem sluggish.
-Animation requires at least 15 screen redraws for each Guide page down or up, left or right.
-Animation sluggishness causes Double-Dash users to delete extra programs in LIST.
-In the Guide, pressing the right arrow 12 times moves you 6 hours ahead. It takes 12 seconds. Without animation it would take less than 1 second.

If you want to see how fast guides and menus on the HR20 can be with out animations. Go into your todo list, select Manual (like you are going to set up a manual recording) move your cursor to the channel select it and start paging up and down. It is a screamer, you can go through all the channels in seconds, no animation they just update the data, If they used this style for all the guides and menus this box would have a screaming fast gui.

I do. It is the exact same GUI as the H20. But the H20 doesn't have the animation. And yes, it is extremely fast. :D

I have an H20 as well, and when I press channel up or down in the guide, there is a pause before it jumps. The animation is probably just covering up the pause.

Do you have the -600 or -100. I had the -600 but it began having problems. So D* sent me the -100 and the guide response is very quick. I don't recall there being any pause at all.

It's the 600. I have heard that the guide is faster on the 100, but it's not a big enough deal for me to bother with replacing it.

I'm surprised your 600 is still working.:D Try watching ESPN HD on it for a while. That is the channel that started the problems for me. Must be the 720p encoder. Right before I got my new one it was rebooting like every 2 or 3 minutes. If you call and tell them it is constantly rebooting they should send you out a new one without any hassle. I was only on the phone with them for 10 minutes. They didn't even make me try to reset it or anything.:)

I've had a handful of reboots happen after I've left it unattended on an MPEG4 channel for a long period of time, but aside from that it's been fine. I've dealt with DirecTV way too much lately, I really have no desire to talk to them any more than I have to.

Your right, I don't know it with 100% certainty, there could be something odd where I don't understand whats going on, but I really doubt it. I do have over 25 years of computer science background, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that if you create an animation transition visual effect, it will always require more computing resources and user time than if you didn't do it at all. IMO the purpose of the guide is to find data on shows that I might want to watch or record and I would like to do it as fast as possible please. IMO the animations are rather clumsy and take away from the function of enabling the user to find program data fast and efficiently. If your goal is to watch words scroll up and down the screen with a small delay after each animated page goes up or down, this interface is spot on. IMO these animations quickly become tedious the more you want to use the guide system. No animations with some form of visual indicator (like arrows) would (in all likelihood) be a much faster performing interface. Since we have been led to believe that the guide data is held in RAM vs a persistent storage, we have no real IO channel constraints, and anyone who had experience in data structures and algorithms would know that we are not talking about anything overly complex problem of data management and we can actually look at a part of the system that allows the user to move through a list of data extremely fast and it is not using animations vs every other part of the system that uses animations is always much slower, so I would say there is an extremely high probability that if they would turn off the animations the UI would be more responsive to the end user.

When I page up or down, I want to do it a page at a time. Speed is everything.

Watching the page scroll by is a useless waste of my time and processing power.

As slow as Tivo was, at least they tried to make their interface efficeint. It was simple but it worked.

A lot of this pretty stuff is nice when you get started. But after a while when you use it every day, what you want is speed and the ability to quickly find the information you want.

Also, they should put more lines on the guide.

Well said. I'll have to try the manual recording menu to see with my own eyes, but for the time being, I'll take your word for it! My first thought was that it was the data that slowed things down judging by: 1) scrolling to the right - does it have to load a whole new time slot for all channels or just what's visible? and 2) keying in a channel, for example when the cursor is resting on 2 and you enter 501 - why is there such a lag - is there animation there or again, is it loading more data?
