Installer was insistent that the receiver and power inserter not be plugged into surge protector. Said they must be plugged directly into wall outlets for MRV to work. Is that right? Seems risky.

Biggest problem with going to any kind of power strip/surge protector is if you turn the power strip/protector off, then you are off the air (even in other rooms with receivers).

I don't really think a surge protector is giving you that much protection. However I do suggest an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) which will protect you from momentary and short term power interruptions. Most UPS also offer some degree of surge protection.

A "surge protector" isn't, but I use mine for the outlets I need and have for a damn long time.

My installer told me the same thing so I have the surge protector plugged into the bottom outlet and the power supply plugged into the top outlet.

Surge protectors can be used to power anything we use. They're pretty much useless. I've been using them for years and I've never had one protect me from surges. I even called Tripplite and asked them about using surge protectors after the UPS, which is not recommended on the Tripplite box, and the Tech I talked to said he had no idea why that was on the box, but he did say using an SP with a UPS was overkill and a waste of money.

Like VOS, I use the SPs because of the configuration, don't expect the SPs to really do anything.

Remember, if an installer was an electrician, he wouldn't be an installer. The advice he gave you was useless (I am an electrician).

All of my DVR 's are plugged into battery back up batteries and non DVR units are in surge protected outlets and I have no known issues with MRV.

Unfortunately, I know some electricians that would be better off working as installers. The world would be a safer place.
