Unfortunately, my new HR20 that I got for free was a -100, and as an active member of the CE program, I'd like a -700. When the installer came out, I asked him for a -700 and he said he didn't have anymore, but everyone was asking him for it... :) .

I know the rules, and I'm not going to contact CSR's and talk about needing it for CE or anything like that (no worries, Earl.) What's the best way to get it then?

I just got a second HR20 and rather than trying to get a deal I "purchased" it from a third party vendor so I would be sure of getting a -700 model. I didn't pay full price but way more than free. Of course if something goes wrong with it and I have to send it in I would probably get a -100 back causing my expenditure of hard earned cash to be for naught, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it will be trouble free.

    I think I forgot to mention...free?

Something like "there is _______ problem with the -100 that there isn't with the -700", so I could call a CSR and tell them that.

Also, I have a protection plan, so if I call and say it broke (many ways to say that) would it be possible they would send me a -700 instead?

MY HR20-100 had a card reader issue so they sent me a new one. I received the 700! I lost my 100 membership but gained the 700 CE fame and fortune! :) Was surprised to see that after loading the latest beta CE that I had VOD (DOD) also.

If you return a "broken" -100, you will almost certainly get a -700 refurb. This may change soon, but there are still a lot more -700's in the pipeline.

I had to return a -100 last month, and got a -700 refurb with a build date of 9/06 in return. Fortunately it was DOA, and the tech that came out gave me a brand new -100 as a replacement. Unlike yourself I wanted nothing to do with the -700. The -100 was so quiet in the bedroom I couldn't stand to lose it. After years of the Tivo turbine fan I just fell in love with the -100.

Only thing I can think of is jump on the "My remote doesn't work/is way too slow and unresponsive with this unit" bandwagon.

What's wrong with the 100? I just got today a HR10 replacement with a HR20-100 build date 5/07. Have not connected it yet, should I be worried and just send it back? This will be my first HR20. HR10 needs a new HDD.

I've had my 700 for a year and recently got a new HR...I did ask the installer for a 700 but he did not have any. BUT, the good news is I have had zero problems with the 100... and since its behind in testing perhaps it will get its own CE's to catch up... either way the 100 is working fine for me.

If I were you I wouldn't bite the hand that feeds you (for free) :)

Its 99.99999999% impossable to request a 100 or 700 when getting it installed or sent out, us installers get whatever d* sent us on skids this month, and even that can vary from 3 diffrent verisons of r15, d11, ect. i've seen us get in 500 and 100 of d11's at the same time as well as 100's in white boxes and then in brown boxes. For an installer point of view, go to bb/cc and grab it, and see if u can have d reimpurse u via credits for it.

What is the advantage of the 700 over the 100?

far as advantage there really isn't any between the two, unless you look at it like this . the -100 has a better cooling setup that lowers cooling temp, also has a digital audio coax, and the fiber optic cable. other than that the internal components is the same as the -700 model.

But, on the advantages for CE's. the -700 gets them more than the -100.
