With a SWM8 there are eight signals [plus a ninths for the guide info] going through the coax. Each tuner uses the 2.3 MHz "comm" to tell the SWM what transponder "it needs". The 2.3 MHz & the nine SWM channels are present on all "legs" of the output.

Well I moved so it was basically like a new install. I don't have 3 coax lines and cat5e in every location like I did at my last place. I could probably go get my 5 LNB off my old house.

If I do this will I have to run 3 more coax from my dish to the switch or just one more?

Yeah, I figured that out just now after I watched the videos, pretty good info on those videos BTW, learned how it works a little better now.

    Thanks again.

Well I have had my SWM for about 9 months and have enjoyed problem free viewing. However today I am running into some problems I cant quite remedy.

And to be honest, I am not 100% sure if its the SWM or not but here goes.

On all of my receivers, I am getting a 771 message. I am in Central Florida where is fairly windy today but nothing too terribly bad. I have unplugged the receivers and the power to the swm a few times and reconnected in reverse along with hitting reset and still no go.

I removed the swm power and connected the line from the wall direct to the box and no go.

I have checked the dish out side (its mounted with no obstruction and perfect line of sight) as well as making sure all the cables are tight.

I have a green power light on the PI

I watched tv yesterday with no issues.

I am at a loss on this one.

    Anyone??????

Ok, got an odd ball after installing my SWM8 today...

On my HR20-100, I try to view content previously saved on the DVR and I get audio with a black screen?

Any thoughts? Is this a known issue? Will this go away in time?

First thing would be to go into the setup menu and look at your SAT level AND your SWM.

I'd reboot the DVR. This doesn't sound like a SWM issue/problem

Getting all zeros for the sat transponders.

    zero signal strength.

I am at a complete loss on this one

is it possible for a SWM to just die?

well tried it one more time, unplugging all, unplugging PI, plugging PI back in and waiting a few minutes, plugging H20 back in and hitting reset and still getting searching for sat.

    UGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok some progress. I have the SWM 1 PWR going to the PI then to a H20 and it now fires up and gets a signal.

SWM 2 is going to the skywalker and then to the rest of the receivers. This isnt going so well which makes me think the skywalker maybe has gone bad?

    further suggestions?

Perhaps the Skywalker has "died" but it would be rare.
How many tuners do you have? I count 7 coax off the splitter.
"back to basic trouble shooting": get one working off SWM1 [through PI] and then test each coax from the splitter by connecting to SWM #2.
If all work [one at a time], then it does sound like your splitter is "Tango Uniform" and you need another.

    I have 3 HR21, and 2 H20 receivers so I should be good there.

I will try your suggestion and go from there :)

    Cheers

with "only" five receiver, why seven cables?
Remember to reboot each receiver "for the test".

well I am a bit surprised but it is the Skywalker. I was able to fire up all the other receivers individually via the SWM 2.

    Shocked.

Maybe that's what happened to the Skywalker.
If I have five receivers, I would connect one off the PI and use a 4-way splitter off SWM #2 for the other four receivers. More power to each receiver and no need for a terminator.

Well at the risk of sounding like a complete greenhorn here...I have a question. I want to get set up with a SWM rig. I live in an apartment with one line run. My plan is to get a slimline-5 dish with the SWM LNB. If I understand the SWM process, I will just need to connect the output from the dish to the PI and the output from the PI to my HR20-700. At that point I should have the ability to record using both tuners from one run, correct?
