Since all Discovery-owned HD networks -- HD Theater, Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel -- are carried by DirecTV, the thought was a Discovery-owned Travel Channel HD likely would be carried by DirecTV as well.

I understand that was the thought, and maybe it would have made a difference as to what was lit up originally. But D* is only doing locals right now (I guess three new Seattle HD's lit up today). But right now, I don't see that it matters. No new national HD until D12 - an opinion no sources to reference.

Discovery gave up the Travel Channel to Cox Communications when they split up their interests.

Understand. My exchange with oldfantom involved speculation as to what might have occurred if Discovery had retained control of Travel Channel rather than transferring ownership to Cox.

Maybe we're getting multiple HD channels on June 1st.

    Here's my original thread: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=158455

Sorry Stuart! I should have posted here. I just got too excited. :sure:

While aware DirecTV extended its contract with the NFL, I didn’t appreciate – as noted in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal – the company “will pay $1 billion a year from 2011-2014, a 43% increase on its current agreement. Tuesday also brought extensions through the 2013 season with CBS Corp’s CBS network and News Corp’s Fox that includes increases of about 2% on deals that pay $1.33 billion per year.”

Query whether this datum solely will translate into increased outlays (yet again) for ST/SF by DirecTV customers or already is influencing other business decisions, including if/when to consummate agreements for distributing general-interest HD programming such as Travel Channel HD?

I share your hopes but the absence of a separate TRAVHD listing strongly suggests otherwise, especially given a repeated pattern in which SD variants of networks simultaneously broadcasting both signals have an "HD" affixed to the name of each program (as you noted for TRAV).

I hear ya, it is just too much of a coincidence to me. I've been checking on zap2it.com for months. This is the first time I've seen an HD tag on Travel. Also, Lifetime and HBO family. What are the odds that those three channels all have "HD tag glitches" starting June 1st.

FYI - zap2it.com had Comedy channel HD listed on their site before it went live on DIRECTV.

    I remember that.

So my question to all you TravelHD-wishers is this: what will your forum avatars be on June 2 if this happens?

We have our usual three places to check for confirmation. the online guide (for a 130-160 ppv going dark), the current sat stream (which I check daily), and sat racer. 0 for 3 so far. but still possible because the stream and the guide usually are updated within 7-10 days out, so we need to be a little closer.

I'm thinking I'll have some sort of HD GUI avatar. :D

With Travel HD and a HD GUI I'll be very content.

Do you recall how zap2it structured the listing before it went live: two blocks for "Comedy" and "CCHD" or just "Comedy" with an HD under each program's title (as is the case with TRAV starting June 1)?

As a Dish customer, I can say that Passport to Latin America is not in HD. The China series and the Great Weekends show are Sam's only HD series.

    My guess is typo.

It depends on what you mean by that. If it's simply mean D* can only do one thing at a time then the end of the French Open will give them a small window. But then you've got golf's US Open, Wimbledon, tennis's U.S. Open, and Sunday Ticket.

Directv is too busy trying to get people to buy PPV by making idiotic name changes then trying to increase customers buying national and premiums.

Well at least they finally made that decision so new national HD should be coming out next week.
