The HR-20 Tips and Tricks Version 2.6 documents tips and tricks in a number of new areas. Again, none of these ideas are my own. Thank you to everyone who contibutes.

    Here's what's new:
+ How to verify Dolby 5.1 is working
+ How to set up your remote to work with your TV, DVD, and Stereo
+ How to use Autorecord (Like TiVo Wishlists)
+ How to Suspend a Series Link (Season Pass) without deleting it.
+ How to record overlapping shows 8:59 on one channel and 9:00 on another
+ How to record only one episode a day
+ How to go from watching a recording back into MyVod where you left off
+ A New Secret Buttons section
    . . . + Frame Forward
    . . . + Frame Back
. . . + Skip to next tickmark back or forward
+ Record to DVD or VCR and get an info splash screen at the begining.

And finally all new tips are marked as NEW so that you can easily see them.

Nice job, I'm going to print it out and keep it handy. One comment I'd like to make is that I've had many TiVo's for many years and I never had to read a manual or keep printed documentation next to the remote just to be able to make it do what a DVR should do.

Incredible. Thanks to all that submit tips and thanks for keeping this updated, especially with the NEW highlights now.

I have a tip that I would like to add as long as others have seen it work successfully.

For those receiving the searching for Sat message and getting a picture. Go to a channel that does not have this mesage and then manually tune into the channel that had the message. It should now be gone.

I know this is more of a workaround to a bug then it is a tip or trick but thought I would post it here anyway.

Thanks for doing this!! May I suggest that the remote programming tips at this link be added as it is much easier to understand, for me anyway, then the on-screen steps. I was trying to get this done for an hour. Then the suggestions on this link made it all very clear. Thanks.

This works most of time but not 100%. I've found 100% is to go to Setup and run the Satellite Signal check. When you go back and tune to channel the Searching For Sat is gone. HOWEVER, this method will ask to turn off any recordings going on so try the alternate channel tune first.

    1) You may want to add that * in the To Do List means a program for autorecord material that the DVR is finding based on a search. Example, if you do a search on anything that has "NBA" in the title and select auto-record the HR20 will attempt to record anything with NBA in upcoming titles. Link that discusses: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=68699&page=2&highlight=star

    2) Also, this may be too long for the guide but alot of folks have PMed me on how helpful this was....your call. :sure:

PROBLEM: You have more than one HR20 unit.....or H20 and HR20. They are located in a electronics rack or close to each other. Since these units have one documented IR code set (00001) when trying to control one the other reacts too.

    SOLUTION:

    First HR20:
    1) Turn both units OFF....use power button on front panel of units.
    2) Hide the H20's (or 2nd HR20) IR window (tape, book, whatever)
    3) Power ON this First HR20.....use power button on this HR20's front panel not the remote !
    4) Put the RC24 remote slider bar on DirecTV logo position.
    5) Using the MENU, Arrows, SELECT/ENTER keys on this HR20's front panel go to Menu> Settings> Setup> Remote> IR/RF. Select IR if not already and proceed with the on-screen instructions to hold down [MUTE]+[SELECT], then 961, then [PgDn] button on remote.....Exit/Done. This will set First HR20 Receiver to IR.
    6) Go ahead on the remote and hold down [MUTE]+[SELECT] again, after two blinks then type 00001. This puts 00001 as the code set for this remote for the DirecTV logo slider position.
    7) Power OFF this First HR20 Unit.
    8) Now Hide this First HR20's IR window (tape, book, whatever)

    Next H20 (or 2nd HR20):
    1) Now un-Hide this H20's (or 2nd HR20) IR window that was previously hidden.
    2) Power ON this H20 (or 2nd HR20).....use power button on the front panel not the remote !
    3) Using the MENU, Arrows, SELECT/ENTER keys on this H20's (or 2nd HR20) front panel go to Menu> Settings> Setup> Remote> IR/RF. Select IR if not already and proceed with the on-screen instructions to hold down [MUTE]+[SELECT], then 961, then [PgDn] button on remote.....Exit/Done. This will set this H20's (or 2nd HR20) Receiver to IR.
    4) Now again using the MENU, Arrows, SELECT/ENTER keys on this H20's (or 2nd HR20) front panel go to Menu> Settings> Setup> Remote> Receiver Mode. You will see either DIRECTV or AV1/AV2, click on whichever to reveal both at the same time. Select AV1/AV2. Select [DONE] on the screen. This has now set this H20's (or 2nd HR20) Receiver to understand the code sets from AV1/AV2 slider position.
    5) Now, go ahead on remote and move the slider from the DirectTV logo position to AV1 position. Next, hold down [MUTE]+[SELECT], after two blinks then type 00002. This puts 00002 as the code set for this remote for the AV1 slider position.

Done ! Now when the RC24 remote slider is on DirecTV logo is controls HR20, when on AV1 it controls H20 (or 2nd HR20). If you have more than one remote you wish to program like this you just need to repeat the hold down [MUTE]+[SELECT] steps only with the corresponding slider position and code set.

I don't think that is what it means. I have never used the autorecord feature and still have got the *. I talked about it in this thread.

I like both ideas. Is the Autorecord symbol a Star instead of an Asterisk? The remote control setup needs at least a full page and might talk about other combinations as well? I have been workign on the TiVo to HR20 Survival Guide for the past few weeks. Would you be interested in doing the Remote Control Setup Guide?

My HR20 manual doesn't even mention Closed Captions. I stumbled onto the activating
procedure for CC once, but failed to write it down. Could someone refresh my memory? Thanks.

Tip sheet is terrific. Thanks very much.

One thing I can't figure, however, is how to batch delete. No where do I find a "Mark and Delete" button.

I also wish the skip feature were faster. By the time I get the HD20 to enter slo-mo, it's gone past the part I want to see in slo-mo. Skipping back and forward is also too slow and the segment breaks are too long.

One of these days, maybe they will let users set instant replay. Six seconds is too damn short, as many here have complained ...

Closed Captioning is in the HR20 Tips & Trick on page 2 under Display Options.

This as well as over a dozen other key features are not even mentioned in the manual but are documented in the HR20 Tips & Tricks.

Mark and Delete is on page 3 under MyVOD. It is also in the DELETE A SHOW section.

I have kept the Tips to 5 pages so that there will be fewer pages to dig through.

Let me know if this works for you!

I would really like to but literally can't find the time. I'm working 12 hour days...6 days a week. I also have two little ones at home so the moments I am home I'm with them. In fact, it's become so bad I find myself reading this Forum to see the bugs because I'm never in front of my HR20 more than a few hours a week.

    Sorry. :(

Great Job on the unofficial Tips and Hints. I've discovered some but you've made our lives a lot easier with some of your Hints. Our TiVo is now in our bedroom and the DVR is attached to our big screen in our living room. We've had the DVR for about a week and everytime I get to use the TiVo I feel like I'm "home". So anything to help get us more familiar with the DVR helps!

My box has worked both ways. At first, DD worked with DD "on." After a reset, DD was disabled. I had to toggle it back and forth several (7 or 8) times between "on" and "off" before DD finallay kicked in when in the "off" position. I suspect that if I did another reset, the same thing would happen and it would be 50/50 as to whether "on" or "off" enabled DD.

Tks Milo. I finally figured it out.

Thing was, I couldnt go into VOD on the lefthand menu and find mark and delete. I had to go to my VOD list, highlight an actual program and then hit the yellow button. That brought up the mark and delete command and other options.
