Seems like everything today uses an USB port. Are there any good uses for the USB port on the back of DirecTV Receivers? Any future plans for it?

Nothing you would probably be interested in. It can be used with an RS232 serial adapter to connect to some high-end home automation systems. It can also be used to power a notebook cooling pad. Other than that, no uses, and no plans that I am aware of.

I use one of mine to power a Chillpad to keep my cabinet-mounted DVR cooler. Works great.

An R22/HR21/HR22/HR23 use the USB port for the AM-21 ATSC add-on tuner.

My Hr20-700's have one in front as well. So now I can use my Targus chillmat and charge my mp3 player.

Now how did I manage to not mention that (I have an AM21)? Oh well, thanks for pointing that out.

Like a few others, it charges my PS3 controllers. It's nice because the USB ports on the PS3 turn off when you power it down. But my DVR USB is always active.
