It surprises you that college football beats NASCAR? You are kidding, right? NASCAR is a niche sport. College Football is mainstream. Look at how many games are on Saturday versus how many car races. ABC (and probably CBS) found that they had better ratings for college football on Saturday night than a regular old shows schedule. College football is mainstream.

Like any sport, hockey is important if you are a hockey fan. We each have our own opinion of what sport is important to us. I for one couldn't care less if I ever saw a college football game or NBA game, but for some they can't live without them. I would be happy if the only sport I ever got was hockey.

Versus does go TBA in guide at 10/1 as well as universal sports.

If no deal then will the HD slot go to some other channel?

I'm probably missing one, making Hockey #10

BTW, I also miss Versus but it's because of college football. The Arizona-Oregon St game on Saturday was on
    Versus.

Although I'm not a fan of the sport, I wouldn't be surprised if soccer (either MLS or some other league) is ranked higher than the NHL.

Hockey last season enjoyed some of it's best ratings in a decade. If this season and this years playoffs can have the excitement of last year hockey will be back up there again. I would say though it is more like the number 4 or 5 sport. No way close to ten

Hockey is a GREAT game and it's very sad that with more excitement and better ratings, millions of people will miss many games in the regular season and most of the playoffs thanks to the Versus mess.....

Well what are we waiting for? Let's bombard DirecTV with emails so they'll settle by Thursday. They set even up a special email address for it, versus@directv.com

While we don't always like the truth there is still the truth. It has nothing to do with being a "fanboy" it's a simple matter of economics. We don't want to pay more for something that we don't watch. Most people will not miss this channel and to those that do there are other options. No one is forcing anyone to stay with a provider they don't want.

It would be nice if this can get resolved so people who want to watch this channel can but overall I wouldn't expect this to happen anytime soon. Both sides have decided to take a stand unless something big behind the scenes happens.

Anyone who sends an email to the NHL TV address will discover it doesn't work!!!!! Well Done NHL!!!!

Hey I wonder why they didn't give us a Comcast address to send emails to?

Frankly if this was all the NHL was going to say they should have said nothing. I'm frankly insulted by this patronising message....

If the above stats are true then there was a net increase of only 57,377 viewers on average. While a 21% increase sounds like a tremendous increase, the net viewers are inconsequential and most definitely not worth the kind of price increase Versus is asking for. Especially if they are trying to use the NHL as their primary reason for raising rates since that only represents a .05 share increase.

The NHL in their prime showcases being the playoffs and finals finished a DISTANT 7th in the race last year and a DISTANT 6th in regular season viewers Source: http://www.colts.com/images/news_photos/communitydynamic/2008yearinsports.pdf (Just happened to remember seeing this last year and it's still up. NFL sources are located at the end of each page of the doc).

They don't show enough FBC football games to justify that kind of increase either. Unfortunately for the NHL, when your ratings are abysmal to begin with, any increase looks huge by comparison. I would hazard a guess that their ratings for FBC football are much greater than they are for NHL. Only problem is that they don't have enough quality FBC games to broadcast as they seem to get the back end of the Big 12 and Pac 10 schedules that aren't picked up already by FSN and ESPN.

But be that as it may, fans want to watch THEIR sport and of course are very passionate about wanting to see their games. But looking at the data from last season, I can see why D* is balking at Versus. The data just doesn't seem to justify the demand.

I would think the actual number is closer to 10.

Yes, perhaps the NHL is not ranked number ten. However, I wouldn't be surprised if TV viewership for soccer (we have to consider that in addition to "mainstream" channels, non-English channels such as Univision and Telemundo show a lot of soccer) is higher than the NHL, which is shown on less TV stations.

I was just suggesting that more TV viewers could be watching soccer over the NHL.

The NHL has a SLIGHTLY greater rating. But not by much.

That doesn't surprise me at all, either. I've been searching the internet for a side by side comparison of the the TV ratings for soccer and hockey, but could not find any.

Do any of you have a link to TV ratings for sports?
