As of Sept. 30, the VOOM satellite TV service from Cablevision and Rainbow DBS had 26,000 activated customers, not much of a change from the approximate 25,000 reported at the end of June and 8,000 activated customers as of April 30.

For the third quarter, Rainbow DBS reported net revenues of $5.9 million and an operating loss of $75.3 million.

Despite the performance at VOOM, Cablevision executives said they're pushing ahead with plans to spin off Rainbow Media Enterprises, which will include Rainbow DBS as well as certain Rainbow programming assets. So far, $1.75 billion has been raised for the spin off, executives said.

The third quarter news was brighter for Cablevision's cable operations. The company's iO: Interactive Optimum digital cable customer base grew by 171,380 to 1.337 million during the three-month period, and high-speed Internet customers jumped by 79,982 to 1.259 million during the quarter. Basic cable customers increased slightly to 2.952 million.

How much longer can Voom possibly last losing $75.3 million per quarter and only having 26K subscribers? where is all this money coming from to keep Voom going?

Probably from somewhere like Echostar. Teaming up with Dish (or DIRECTV) is probably VOOM's only chance of making it. They could provide a "VOOM programming package" or something and probably make a lot more money selling it to Dish customers than trying to do it all on their own.

I totally agree with mike123abc, but that also begs the question how long can charlie go it alone compared to D* & Rupert's empire. I think within the next year with the addition of VOOM he will have to consider merging with a broadcaster conglomerate (abc/disney, cbs/viacom, etc....). He has got to see the writing on the wall sometime.

I am now a new customer for E* and soon will be getting rid of Cable. While on the phone with a sales person, I asked about internet service thru E* and they said next year sometime they will have a package deal with internet service. Now that will be nice! :)
