My birthday is coming up. I will be 33. As I am now becoming middle aged, I have been thinking about the changes that I have witnessed. Being in the middle of Gen X, I thought about some of the things that my generation was the last to do. I thought it might be fun to start a list.

    We were the last to...

    ...own vinyl albums.
...eat a Big Mac out of a styrofoam container.
...use DOS as our main OS.
...At least in the rust belt- drive the old style Beetle.

    ...

    ...use a rotary dial telephone
...not be able to talk on the phone no matter where you are
...heck, cassette tapes probably almost apply here
...drink scaldingly hot coffee from McDonalds :D
...have 4 wheels in a rectangular pattern on our roller "blades"
...watch commericals on television :D:D (hopefully!)

...have a Black and White TV in the Livingroom.
    ...not have satellite delivered television.
    ...use a typewriter.
...rent your telephone from the phone company.
    ...have "party line" telephone service.
    ...respect our parents.

    The...
    the last generation to...

    - know that television can actually be received free OTA, without cable.
    - know where Danang is located
    - remember the draft (hopefully)
    - own an 8-track player
    - have lived before terrorism, school shootings and pipe bombs
    - carry cash and combs
    - drive a stick with no a/c
    - owned or driven a 'station wagon'
    - be forced to take a detour off the interstate because the highway wasn't finished
    - remember who Idi Amin was
    - remember when 50% of Americans smoked, and did so indoors :smoking:
    - remember when men smoked pipes and wore hats, not caps

Here are a few things you may or may not remember:

    - You cannot fathom not having a remote control for the TV.
    - Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
    - Michael Jackson has always been white. -
    - Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
-When all gas stations had "Pay at the pump" service
-Remember Ultraman and Johnny Soko.......that was cool
    -reel to reel movies
-Really believing that 8 tracks would outlast cassettes due to their faster tape speed across the head.
-Watching the LP selections go from mono to stereo.

I'm 36, so a little further toward the beginning of Gen-X, maybe it was where I grew up or something, but 8-Track Tape never seemed like something good. My 5 year older Brothers and Cousins all had 8-Track tapes, but my friends and I went straight to Audio Tape as the way to got for music in the Car and often in the home. Althought Linear Tracking turntables were the big thing with the Audiophiles.

    Here is my list...
    1) When the president was on TV, there was no alternative to change to. I remember that during the nixon hearings on PBS, I went thru Sesame Street withdrawal.
    2) Remembering a time when day after day, no adults would see Mr. Snufelupagus and prove that Big-Bird wasn't pretending (I would get very upset every time Mr. S would walk away at the worst time)
    3) When women with Big Hair were the most beautiful women on the planet. The bigger the hair the better!, and Polyester and the Panty Line was king!!!
    4) When most of your teachers became teachers to avoid going to Vietnam.
    5) When no one you grew up with ever-ever considered joining the Military.
    6) When a Frozen dinner took 55-60 Minutes to cook.

    The...
    the last generation to...

    ...give a damn!
...fly without a chance of being strip-searched
...meet friends flyiing in, at the gate
...walk down the street or into a store without being video-taped
...not worry about 'Urban Warfare'. and just whose 'urban' they have in mind
...think everything's going to turn out all right after all
...live through the end of the industrial age and the start of the information age
Finally, we're the last generation to have lived in the last century (ouch)!

Heck, I am in a generation where "hippy" is a boy shape that my wife complains about, "pot" is what overlaps my belt, and we drop antacid instead of acid.

...remember Happy Days when it was on ABC, not TV Land
...remember Drew Barrymore as the kid from ET and Poltergeist, not Charlie's Angels
...wear white socks with colored stripes at the top
...buy a car for under $10,000
...buy a house for under $100,000
...go to a movie for $5
...remember downtown as a decaying, scary place to stay away from (thankfully that is changing in most cities)

I am 35 and remember all those things. We still have a mega drive-in in Salt Lake with six screens. Haven't been there as I am half deaf from working on the flight line in the AF, and like movies loud, sitting in a stadium seat theatre.

Remember when we only had a dozen or so TV channels.
    Communism is evil.
Remember when people didn't have to lock the doors to their house or car.

    No video games
    Pinball machines
    The Bill of Rights
DBS had good pic quality at one time
Thrillers where if the killer cut the phone line then the victim was screwed, period!
Downtown America was filled with stores
When Matchboxes were made in the UK
    Good music
    The 10 Commandments
    Non GM food
When something was made in the USA
    2+2=4
When Ozzy Osbourne was a public enemy
Being a fag was a bad thing
    No VCR
    Drive-in movies

Cooking fried chicken in an iron skillet, filled with lard, over an open flame, using the drippings for gravy, only seasoning used was salt pepper and flour and living to an old age when everything you ate was "bad" for you.
