View photos and listen to music that is stored on a PC that is setup using a media server software in the home network, download movies, shows, etc using the internet DOD, see this link for DOD... http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=137

Will networking my HR20 allow me to dump a show to a low-rez file that I can play back on my iPod Touch while I travel? Not trying to burn DVD's in fantastic quality. Just want some small 100mb file to watch a TV episode that I've recorded.

Nope! No access to the root directory or any recorded material.

Thanks for the answer, but the question again from a different angle:

Instead of getting at the actual video files on the HR20, is there a way to network it to a PC so as to get it to "play" while something else on the PC "records"?

Right now, I can dump a show to a standalone DVD recorder by going through the analog connection and hitting 'play' on the HR20 and 'record' on the DVD recorder but that's a major time waster and then I still need to import the shows from the burned DVD into my PC in a format that my iPod can display. Is there a way to network, launch some software, and record a show to a compact file?

You can not send recorded programs over the network. The network is for input to the HR21 like VOD and your photos and music you share on your pc and view on you tv. You could add a tv card to the pc and connect it up like a dvd recorder and record it to the pc in place of a dvd, still a lot of work and time doing it that way.

Thanks. Looks like no need to network for me. I've got an Apple TV to do the heavy lifing via wireless for photos, videos, and audio.

Another benefit to having the network hooked up is being able to send feedback to DIRECTV on the DVR's stability. In the future you will probably also be able to order PPV over the ethernet cable instead of the phone as well.
