I am scheduled to have a Genie installed on Monday, and I have a quick question. What remote do you use ?
    RC65
    RC71

I am excluding the harmony line because I am poor and cannot afford one....

Is one better than the other and why ?

The RC65 can be used in IR mode only with the 44.

The 44 has a new RF standard, RF4CE, that the RC71 uses.

The 44 also 'listens' on both RF and IR so you could use both in the same room - in range of IR for the 65.

71 Like that it doesn't need to be pointed at the tv to work the 44.

RC models 32, 34, 65, and on occasion the RC71. I have been a rather strong voice against the RC71 in particular with respect to the Genie line in that the Genie represents a flagship class Home Media Center and the remote is more like a motel room issue. It is not a bad device. . .

Its feel is nice, key response is far superior to the prior models, ergonomics are good, one learns to feel the simplified layout quickly negating the need for backlighting in reality.

It does lack a stop key the post WH stream viewing experience requires the exit key which does not bring up the post actions selection menu. Or waiting till it hits end of recording to choose keep or delete. Bigger in my mind though is that the play key does play/pause. Older models allow one to check the program progress bar without pausing the program by pressing their discreet play key. This dual purpose key on the RC71 always pauses it and you must double tap to check progress and deal with a stutter in the process.

Other people have other observations but those are the two that irk me. Neither remote design has direct access keys to the PIP feature set.

For all practical purposes the RC71 is a great little device, I just prefer the discreet play/pause keys and stopping a stream on a post activity selection menu as oppose to exiting and having to drill back in for post activity selections. Plus a HMC flagship DVR deserves a flagship remote in my thinking. (Like the Wagon Queen Family Truckster) :)

We use both. My Wife, with her smaller hands, gets the new RC71, I use the old RC65.

I prefer the RC 71 to RC65. I find it more responsive; one button click and I get the response I desired, with the RC65 sometimes would take a couple button clicks or repositioning to a more direct line to receiver before I would get a response.

I typically use my Harmony. However, my backup (when I accidentally allow the rechargeable battery to die) is the RC65 because it can also control the volume on my A/V receiver. I have no need for RF.

Also, because I use the RC65 for the HR24, in my guest bedroom, it's easier to be consistent and just have one DirecTV remote to remember where the buttons are, rather than having to search for the buttons on the RC71.

I have a Genie on order -- installation is on Oct 10th. After the installation, I'll have both a Genie and HR21 in my A/V rack. Can the RC71 control both DVR devices or must I use the RC65 to control both units in the IR mode?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dave C.

You should be able to use RF for the Genie and IR for the HR21 on the RC71 remote. Or both on IR with the RC65. If it were me, though, I'd use both remotes, FWIW.

I don't believe you can control two dvrs with the RC71. . . that's the main reason we continue to use the RC65 for the 44. Also, it doesn't control the TV or Soundbar correctly. (also have a 24 and 20 in that room)

Sorry if this has been answered, I did try searching..

Is the RC71 still not working with soundbars?

Looking to replace the HR24 in the living room with a Genie client (replacing another HR24 in the basement with the genie), but the living room TV plays through a Vizio soundbar. The RC65 remote is working great to control the soundbar, but I like the RF control over the DTV receiver.

While I don't think there is a code for every SB on the market today, they do work with SBs
