    NO!

Do it! He offered you better than free!

    $199
    -120
    -100
    = -$21

He was trying to pay you $21 to take an HR20!

    DO IT!

Call back before they rethink it!

I'm a new customer trying to get a great deal but having no luck. Here's the deal from Dish Network:

    200 Channels (31 in HD)
    FREE HD DVR VIP722
$120 HD Programming Credit (6 months)
FREE HBO and MAX for 3 months
    $42.99 for 6 months. $62.99 after that.

I can't get any of the Directv CSR's to budge off of $199 for the HR20 even after I tell them the Dish deal. I would rather have Directv, but if they can't even come close to that deal, I might be forced to go with Dish. Can anyone help me out as to what to ask for or some secrets? The script doesn't really help a new customer. I can't ask for retention, for example.

2nd time is a charm. 19.95 but he wouldnt tell me my hearts but did say they were good and that's why he can lower it for me

I hope my saturday morning slot goes well this week

edit, forgot to add, the bill at the install window shows full price but my currently due bill clearly shows +199 and - 199 for a net of 19.95. General retention credit.

no MS on work order but i asked him 4 x and he said it is on, he knows i'm keeping all receivers.

Thanks to this site, I was able to get a decent deal on an HR20 as follows:

We had recevied a phone msg asking us to call and upgrade our non-DVR HD receiver to a new one for free. I called that number, 888-763-7772 to speak with someone. Christina said the free upgrade was just good for an H20 non-DVR recvr. I asked about the HR20 and she said it would be $299. I asked for our heart rating and we're a 4 and we're out of our commitment. I made the appt for the H20 install, got it for 3 days away from today.

Waited 10 mins. Using "The Script", I called the main number, said "Cancel" and talked with Nora about "my mom said maybe we should've gotten the HD DVR" (sorry mom). Nora said that it was normally priced at $299, but that she could offer it to us for $199. I asked if there were any programming credits and she said she could offer us 6 months of free HD access (-$60). Then I asked if upgrading our programming package would help. <we were on total choice plus for 51.99 plus hbo, showtime & sports pack for an add'l 34> Nora said she could offer us the Premier package for $89 for 12 mos (-$120). I said all that sounds great, we made the appt for 10/24 at 8am. During the time I made small talk and she said that the installers are only being given the HR20-700 so I won't have any problems there. I also found out that since the NHL CenterIce package doesn't have a SuperFan option like MLB and NFL that we'll get out-of-market HD games for no additional charge.

    Thoughts?

Thanks to this site for having the information ready and easy to use to get a decent deal (it's not $19, but we didn't have the DirecTV DVR before, so...).

Anybody buy a HR20 at Best Buy? When I got my 2nd HR10-250 over a year ago, I bought it at Best Buy. I think it was $300, I was also buying a new TV at the time, and they gave me $300 off the price of the TV for buying the HR10-250. Then when I called to activate it (actually, I may have called D* BEFORE going to Best Buy), I got $200-300 in credits. So I ended up saving $400-500 total.

I'm just curious if 1) Best Buy is still selling HR20s and if they will give you a bunch off the price of a TV like I got a year ago, and 2) If I'd be able to get the credits from D* if I didn't get it directly from D*.

You can get better than $199. Get to retention.

I am SOOOOO aggravated at D* right now! I finally decided to pull the trigger today and call D* and run through the 'script' and get the best deal I could for a HR20. Realistically, my greatest hope was to get it at $199, and then be able to offset that with some credits. Well, low and behold, I log in to the forums to have the script in front of me and I see MUZZYMATE's post about his dad getting a HR20 and dish upgrade for free! Well suddenly my hopes were raised that I could actually do BETTER then $199!

So I first go to the E* webpage and there it is, a FREE offer for a HD-DVD AND Free programming credits! So armed with this I call D*. No theats of cancellation, just straight up that I've been a long time SD DVR D* customer, and am looking to upgrade.

First Rep, "No way we can match that. We can give you one for $299.". So I polietly say I'll have to think about it and hang up.

Second Rep, "The best we can do is $199, but no programming credits are available. The FREE HR20 is available, but to NEW customers only." So since my commitment period is UP, I ask if she really is saying that I have to cancel my D* service, and then call back as a new customer? She places me on hold and then comes back and tells me "I can get you the FREE HR20 with installation and 5 lnb dish upgrade. It should arrive in 5 to 10 days, and when you receive it, you can call to arrange installation." SWEEEEET!!!! Again, MUCH MORE then I had hoped, but after hearing MUZZYMATE's experience and seeing that E* really IS giving it away free, I knew I wasn't asking TOO much!

So true to the script, I log onto the webpage to check my order. NOTHING IS THERE. So I call D* back about 10min later to verify with a rep. Again, NOTHING IS THERE, and the rep is telling me that there is NO WAY that I could have been offered that, that the best anyone could do is $299.

Wow! Talk about having the wind taken out of your sails. Suddenly this isn't even a case where I was unable to get a great deal that another customer got, it is that I was PROMISED a great deal by a D* CSR, which I then had them RE-ITERATE to make sure that we were on the same page, and then to have my order DISAPPEAR and bascially be called a liar by the following CSR.

Again, I never went into this with threats of cancelation, just looking for a good deal, but honestly after this kind of treatment I'm not only extremely disappointed, but now I'm also angry. Why shouldn't I take up E* on their offer?????

    Good Job!

You do a lot of good here. It is nice to here that you were treated so well.

Keep following the script: Getting a Good Deal on the HR20.

You are on step 8. You can check your order live while you are on the line and see that it is correct.

Reach out young Luke and feel the Force. Trust the Force!

Seriously, Retention are the only ones who can give anyone the really best deals.

After hearing the stories of a thousand people calling in, we have learned a lot.

well we will see how 'well' the installer treats me when they cant get 119 in. If the install takes place this saturday I will start a thread of praise for ironwood. however the pessimist in me says they will shut me down for not having 119 LOS and i'll be typing a bitching thread instead

    =--------------

it also says swap on the bill but again, i paid for and am continuing to have my HDtivos so he will not be allowed to take them even if he tries

I called in four times yesterday with the DISH deal in hand, D* wouldn't budge from $199 for the HR20. One lady even ran a credit check on me first (which I passed, obv) but still wouldn't give me ANY sort of deal or programming credits outside of the standard deal on the web page. Get this, she actually told me to GET DISH. She told me if the $199 up front was too much that I should go ahead and GET DISH, but that I wouldn't be happy with it, and I'd switch to D* soon enough. Apparently, they have no desire to add me as a customer. Any other suggestions before I give up? Keep in mind that I'm not a current customer, and I've never had D* before.

Is it possible to get a deal from retention if I'm not a current customer? How would I go about doing that?

    1. Check out the competition. Print out the offers from Comcast, DISH, etc.
    2. Call DIRECTV at 800-531-5000. Ask for Retention. Some have said "Cancel" at the automated prompt as a password. Do not make threats.
    3. Be friendly & polite. Tell them you want to stay with DIRECTV. Repeat their name & write it down. Ask them how many "Hearts" you are.
    4. Current Customers: Ask when your commitment ends and your contract buyout price. They can do better deals near or after your commitment date.
. . New Customers: ask about special offers, referrals programs, etc. See below.
    5. Ask, "What is the best deal DIRECTV can give me?" Get offer. Ask again, "Is that the best DIRECTV can offer?"Tell the competing offers if needed.

per craigs comments of ways for retention

    1. hearts doesn't matter anymore.. no such thing as 5 hearts.. meaning remember the free equpmt every 6 months for those people.. -- it doesn't exist anymore..

    2. free hd-dvr option -- it doesn't exist.. not a magic button anymore... best of that is the $100 off for $199 price.. then depends on what extra programmng credits from there.

    3. d/h that has to be paid.. why?? that is a very small amt that direct tv charges to get that equpment into the hand of the hsps.

    4. Guys.. do you not think DTV reps don't know the other deals the other companies have out there.. Most really do keep up with them

    5. I don't know why you think your commitment has anything to do w/better deal.. or price. because if you leave it is going to be your loss of money. NO offense, but the more attitude you show when trying to get this ird, the less chance it is going to happen.

    6. Honestly, if you get an offer for $199 & then programming now.. Be happy.. ok.. & remember this.. if you get a good offer the first time take it.. because the next rep can & is suppose to give their own offer.. 1st offer on table is not a guarantee you'll get it the next time.

basically, you hearts, your commitment & sometimes even the time you've been w/dtv don't matter with what you get.. it really depends on the rep you get.. Alot of changes have happened in the last month & hearts don't matter on free equpment at all anymore.. only thing it means is the limit of credit a rep can give to resolve an issue & that is lowered, also..

I should know I am in the top ranking of the ones at my center. I can't say I agree w/some of the changes but I can see the reasoning of why this ird can't be given out for free.

Different schemes to try to get something really may back fire. Most reps, know of this site & keep up w/it. Some enjoy some of the insight on the tips or things you've come up w/for ts.

Please don't take any of this with offensive but we rather you be honest with us that the cost of the equpment is higher than what you are willing to pay.. then we have a straight up idea. what the issue is & how we may be able to assist you. I'd rather hear that than "the dishnet offered me a hd-dvr in 4 rooms" umm, I don't think so.. there is an offer for 4 room dvr which actually =s 2 dvrs since they split the signal w/an mrr unit..

Hey I love ya'll guys here.. really.. just some sane advise from an insane rep. Take care & good luck.. I love my dtv & my hr-20 & I really want everyone to be happy..

    Surfbird,

Thank you so much for your insight!

+ The notes now emphasize that:
Your deal may have more to do with the rep you get than anything else.

+ Your Hearts rating will now only affect the limited credits a rep can give.

+ I expanded this section to emphasizes even more being polite:
You are making a sale here. You don't make a sale by bragging about how old you are, tenure, or how big your package is. Kill them with kindness. Never have an attitude.

    + I added:
If you get a good deal the first time, take it!

+ I revised the first line to read:
    1. 1. Note that competing offers from Comcast, DISH, etc. may not be HD DVR's, etc.

    We really appreciate your feedback!

    How does this look now?

Can HR10 customers still get upgrades for less than $199? Many are reporting just paying delivery and handling...

I am also trying to switch to d* after my move later this month and have never had an account in my name there before. Are you saying that I could just call and say cancel to get to retention and then ask for a deal on new service.
Will they be able to do that for me or will I have to keep trying the csr's waiting for one that will offer me the best deal. Have you ever heard of the s&h deal for a new sub.

The best deal that I have got so far was
    hr20 $199
    h20$99
    sunday ticket
    free super fan
    10 mo $10 credit
    4 months premier package 69.99

    thanks

    chad
