The cubs have not even announced their TV schedule for next year. There is a very good chance that with new ownership they wont have any game on tribune TV(WGN) next year.

Ownership of the Tribune Company has not yet been transferred to Sam Zell. Financial information on the Cubs, with or without Wrigley Field, has not yet been made available to potential buyers, so there have been no bids for the team yet. According to the Tribune, perhaps a dubious source, the sale of the Cubs won't be complete until well into 2008. I don't think there is even a slight chance that WGN won't continue to carry Cubs games next year. If you have a source to support your claim, please provide it.

Sam Zell is on the board of directors. I assure you he is firmly in control. Perhaps next year is too soon but when the cubs are under new ownership the chances they will have any games on WGN is very slim. My source is a member of the executive advisory board of the company were I work. He is a former member of the board of directors of the tribune company and part of John Canning's potential ownership group.

You were talking about next year. Now I guess you aren't. I have no idea what will happen after 2008. I would imagine that Mr. Zell would like to see the Cubs continue their relationship with WGN, but I have no idea what Mr. Canning, if his group is the ultimate buyer [since he's Bud Selig's good bud, I assume he will be], will do. I just don't think he'll be making any decisions about television rights for the 2008 season.

For me it doesn't matter that they don't carry much HD programming. The picture on the HD channels look alot better on my 61" TV than the SD channels. Just getting a cleaner picture makes it worth it.

Don't forget about Da Bulls... The games looked like SD Lite last year, I would settle for full SD during Bull games. Bulls could win the central this year.

Earl, I'm a newbie posting here and my admiration for you and all you've done for this community is boundless but, man, you are SO full of horse pitute.

About the only thing you Chicago guys did right this year is win more games than the Brewers.

Beyond that, as an audio guy I remember when stereo broadcasts of the Cubbies were the very first ones I heard in Dolby Surround. This was before Dolby Pro Logic, even, and before Saturday Night Live went to Dolby Surround in the early 1980s. I played them back through a Sansui QS decoder I paid dearly for from the old quadraphonic days. And let's hear it for a great Illinois company, Shure, who wired Wrigley Field for surround sound and made the excellent HTS-5000 Dolby Surround decoder that replaced the antique Sansui in my system.

Bring on the Cubs on in high definition!

And Earl, you are officially banished to the upper decks of Comisky Park (I refuse to call it anything else than that although it has none of the charm of the old ball field). I hope you don't fall down from vertigo.

Since you folks don't know me yet, this whole post is with a huge ;) and three glasses of scotch.

What incentive would they have to move games OFF of WGN? To put more games on Comcast SportsNet, where less people have access? Or more games on WCIU, aka "the fuzzy channel"?

I don't see why they would move games off of WGN at all, hell it was being on the Superstation that helped to establish their massive national following.

I mentioned next year because I still believe, perhaps naively, that the sale will go through before next season. Its in all parties best interest that it happen sooner, rather than later. I also think that because Canning and Zell are such good friends that if it is apparent that Canning will be the new owner he will have some say over these issues much as Zell is controlling the tribube now. But you are correct that if the sale doesnt happen before feb-march there will still be games on WGN next year, although the number seems to go down ever year.

WCIU looks great to me, i think their HD broadcasts look as better than WGN.

Because the new owners won't own WGN. How many yankee games arent on YES? How many red sox games arent on NESN? I agree that being on a superstation helped establish the national fan base but it will all come down to money and the money will be in putting the games on the cub owned network. Its certainly possible that Zell could bid for rights to out the games on WGN but its not even clear that he wants to keep WGN.

Slightly off topic (but on topic for nutty Cubs fans)

Now that D* carries the comcast chicago regional sports net, if I buy the maxed out baseball extra innings pack will all comcast games be broadcast in HD next year on channel 640? (fingers crossed!!)

As a dislocated Chicagoan, I still watch WGN news time to time, and their SD compression has always bothered me.. WGN-HD would be a very welcome addition for better SD picture quality alone

Comcast only broadcasts the home games of the Sox and Cubs in HD. Away games are SD.

WGN-HD and WGN-SD will both be losing more Cubs games. Cubs ownership has stated that beginning in 2008, fans will see fewer games on WGN Superstation and eventually fewer on WGN Channel 9 local.

Comcast also broadcasts some away games on their HD channel, but I believe it is just upconverted widescreen SD.

FYI, if things go according to plan, MLB stated that next season MLB EI will have all games in HD that are available.

Actually, I think it's DirecTV that said all games produced in HD will be shown in HD on its MLBEI satcasts. I don't know whether Dish or cable will follow suit.

True, but they can have it for 2008 if they agree to MLB's terms.
