Sorry for those not following all of my threads, my statements might be confusing.

In the past, when I was in WMP11 and I checked the "Share Media" tic box, nothing would happen. It would just sit there with the "OK" button greyed out, then after a few minutes... return me to the exact same screen.

Now, when I click on the "Share Meda" tic box, I get an expanded window with a "Settings..." button, and what appears to be a device window (where uPNP devices would be listed).

Nothing shows in that device window (my term, the "box" is not labeled).

I have attached pictures of what I mean.. the smaller pic is the "before" and the larger pic is the "after". Note, there are no devices listed in the "after" picture... my HR-20 isn't being seen by WMP11 still.

Yes, I have rest the HR-20, multiple times.

Weird thing for me today too....

I've had WMP11 working for MONTHS and now I went to "menu" today and music and photos are gone.

Trying to get it back up and running....

    Don't know why it disappeared.

    Anyone else have this problem?

I'm trying to get it to work and will update if I figure it out.

Well this is strange! I've been struggling to get WMP11 to work as the server, the only thing I could get to stream was playlists. Decided to rename the folder to My Music, as it sits on a secondary drive within the system.

I get the dialog box that it is searching for new content, and if you close the box, the search will take longer. Now comes the strange part. While it is recompiling the database, I can access the WMP11 server. When it's done, the only thing I can access is the playlists again. Is there a limit to the numer of songs? I have probably 3-4 thousand songs.

Tversity has always worked, but I do prefer to use WMP11 as the server, so I would like to get this working.

If you have followed all of the points in post #1 of this thread, then I have no more ideas for you except to remove WMP11 and re-install it. Since it did not seem to work correctrly from the begining, perhaps a re-install will fix this.

Yes, in my signature click on the network help link and look for the title in that thread titled "Music & Photos Not Showing Up in Menu". You may want to do the UPnP portion in this title "Media Server Logoff Message".

I have heard others complian about this with large libraries. I recommend sticking with what works, TVersity in this case.

OK, I finally got the HR20-700 to show up as an unknown device in WMP11!!! I have set my "My Pictures" and "My Music" folders to allow sharing, and allowed the HR20 in WMP. Now I get no media options on the HR20. Tried turning it off, menu reset, and RBR, still no menu. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, just seen Spanky_Partrains suggestion in his sig!!!

I had everything working fine until the last few days. I think it may be related to a recent Windows Update. I made the changes that were recommended above. I've got connection with my laptop, but I still cannot see the Desktop. They both were connected to the HR20-100 last week...

I thought I'd reinstall WMP... Can't do that on Vista laptop (but laptop works ok so I guess I don't need to worry), but I think I'll give it a shot on the DT.

    Anyone have any additional suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

Well, I figured out why I couldn't get connection to my DT. I use ZA firewall and unlike Windows FW (on my Vista laptop) which automatically opens the necessary ports when you enable media sharing, you have to open certain ports manually within 3rd party firewalls.

The ports are UDP 1900, 10280-10284 and TCP 10243, 49152, 2869. To get to this setting in ZA: Open ZA Control Center and go to Firewall > Main > Custom > Trusted zone > see the last 4 entries in Highest Settings for Trusted Zone (check boxes and add above ports).

I also have AVG installed (yeah I know... shouldn't have 2 FW) and it is a lot more complicated to configure for ports. I still cannot connect to my desktop if AVG FW is enabled. So I have to turn it off (via MSconfig start up services).

    Hope this helps someone.

I included this information under the title "FireWall Ports That May Need to be Opened" in post number one of http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=99327.

    Thanks

Is the EnableRemoteContentSharing DWORD under Preferences or HME ?

Its a key under HME - but if you are using Vista you should find at least one SID (looks like S-1-5-21-xxx - S-1-5-21 is the authority for network services) You will need to add the key under that authority.

I'm using XP Pro SP2 but I do see a S-1-5-21-xxxx under HME...do I need to add the key there too ? So, BOTH locations or just HME ?

Also, I was reading the FAQ under Microsoft which goes thru this. Is this reg edit for the machine accessing the remote files or the machine with the remote files ? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sharing.mspx

Ok I see what you are looking at -

Yes - the first procedure (EnableRemoteContentSharing key) is for the PC (the one you want to show up on the HR20) that contains the library you want to share.

The key goes directly under HME not the SID as I thought initially.

I am working thru this right now - I have my music showing up in the content directory - but can't play it yet so I am double checking a few thing.

Well this is frustrating - after all of that I have the contents showing up - but it would appear WMP doesn't like to transcode across the network.

Sorry I have no more suggestions - (well Install TVersity comes to mind  ) - I think it would work if the HR20 played MP3 natively.

Addition: So later I was able to get a single song to play across the network share - then it was back to "Unable to access" so I guess I have it working (as well as it will work apparently)

Check out my thread I tried to consolidate all the WMP11 items. Any comments, errors, additions welcome: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=114861

I have mine working and WMP11 transcodes MP3 to LPCM fine.....however I am not accessing any remote shared files via this WMP11 PC...all content is local.

Yes the locals are fine - just those remote shares. Its ok though - I prefer TVersity since I can add streams to it.

Looks like the CEs are working on MP3 native codec. Anyway, what did you change and/or follow to get the share folder to be seen and play the one file ?

Worked for me! I had given up on this on my XP SP2 desktop but the XBox 360 forum posted solved the problem for me. I can now see the HR-20 as "Uknown Device" in the Media Sharing screen. Never had a problem with media sharing when I tested it out on my Vista laptop but all my pictures and music are on my desktop. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I cheated actually - mapped drive :)

But I still had to add the registry entry so I don't think it treats it any differently

Ok I tried all the steps in this but my HR20 never shows up as a device in WMP11.
