I'm sorry if this is off-topic, but can anyone tell me how much total recording time you get on a 500GB drive vs. 750GB vs 1TB???

500GB: about 400 hours of SD, 100 hours of MPEG4 HD, 60 hours of MPEG2 HD

750GB: about 650 hours of SD, 175 hours of MPEG4 HD, 105 hours of MPEG2 HD

1TB: 900 hours of SD, 225 hours of MPEG4 HD, 135 hours of MPEG2 HD

I think that is about right and it depends on what you are recordings.

Also, I believe the stock drive in my HR20-100 is a 320 GB Seagate. It looks like it will hold about 50 ish hours of HD programming and is currently over 90% full.

Have a WD 1 TB hard drive and Kingwin enclosure I haven't gotten around to putting together but may do so this weekend!

Not that this should be a surprise to anyone, since it's mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but the above setup is working fine for me. An MX-1 enclosure and the Western Digital WD Caviar GP Disk Drive 1 TB Green Power. I do wish the MX-1 enclosure was not so hard to get the screws back into. I did not have a magnetized screwdriver, so getting all 4 screws back in was a bit of a challenge.

Of course after I bought the drive at Fry's on Saturday, I found a couple places selling it on sunday for 50.00 less. That's the way my luck always seems to run. But the drive was already mounted and working, so was not about to return it.

I'm still relatively new to DTV. Does anyone know of a menu screen or something that says the size of the external drive or how much space is used / free? Yea, I know about in the play list where it says things like 95% free. I was hoping for something a bit more detailed with real numbers.

It does kinda suck that you can use the internal drive, or the external drive, but not both. I had to re-do all my season passes and stuff. Yup, that's mentioned here in the thread too, but just seems like a simple software problem for them to solve. Didn't realize it would have to redownload the guide data again, but I guess that makes sense. Had to wait a day before I could re-enter all of my SP's since the info was not in the guide. At least being new to DTV, my list of passes was not too huge. I'm coming from the Cable / Tivo S3 world and that box had a loooong list of stuff to record on it. :)

Just received the 1 Terabyte External Drive from Cavalry and it's flawless!! Black case and blue light are an added bonus as it matches the HR21 perfectly!

as I noted above, I setup this drive over the weekend with an MX-1 enclosure. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen some freezes with this drive? I'm not sure if its the new drive setup, or if it's DTV itself.

I added a couple days to the long weekend, so have had some time to really enjoy the sat setup and the external drive. But I have noticed a few programs where the picture just freezes, or studders and the sound keeps going like it is in a sort of semi-fast forward mode. Nothing drastic, but certainly noticeable. I'd say i've seen this in about 3 or 4 out of the 15 to 20 programs I've watched since adding the drive. I don't remember having this problem prior to adding the external drive.

It's not enough yet for me to do anything about disconnecting the drive, but wanted to ask if anyone else with the same setup, has seen this issue?

I'm using a Simpletech 1TB (2x500GB) external. Got it at OfficeMax for a slickdeal when it was mispriced.

No issues (except for when I pulled it out to check the manufacturer - I pulled the cable and killed my kids show!)

    Northern...
Thought folks might appreciate me posting this as an FYI. I've had a 1 TB Thecus N2050 eSATA RAID 0 w/2 WD Caviar SE16 500GB setup for about 15 months. It died last week. It worked great while it lasted (no errors, etc). But one of the two drives died and, as you probably know, when you're using RAID 0, if one drive dies, the whole array dies.

I lost about 70% of a TB of shows. (A fair amount.) :< (However, my wife and I seem....strangely....liberated by this. :>)

    So, why did it die?

I'm not sure--but it always did run very hot. Only one of the drives died, and the enclosure appears fine. My guess is that the enclosure kept the temp too hot--it really is a cheap enclosure--and the drives just couldn't handle it.

Rather than try to replace the drive and start over I've gone out and bought a Cavalry CADA CADA002SA2-B 2TB 7200 RPM External Hard Drive -- running it in RAID 1 (safe/mirrored) setup. I bought it based on recommendations on this site (which said it was quiet and worked easily). Best part about it is that if one drive dies, the other should continue to work and I can replace the defective one.

So far I'm satisfied but not overjoyed with the Cavarly. It is a bit quieter with the fan than the Thecus (the fan is bigger and appears to cool it better). But, the drives themselves are louder -- I can hear them reading/writing in a quiet room. It isn't as quiet as the reviews here seem to indicate. It isn't loud by any stretch, but you can definitely hear it in a quiet room.

I also had some issues configuring it for RAID 1 -- the dial on the back is not easy to use (bad design) and had to tweak it using USB cable and the software (which didn't work well either). But I did get it working.

I'll post back with any additional info I get about the Thecus or the Cavarly. I'm going to cross post this in the other eSATA thread to ensure folks see it who are thinking about enclosures. Happy to answer any questions too.

OK, I bought a SATA enclosure and SATA HDD. If I've properly installed the drive in the enclosure, do I have to first connect it to my home computer and partition it, format it, run diag, etc., or can I just connect it to the HR21-100?
