All of mine were and are annoyingly loud. Sounds like a big fan. But I called Seagate and they say they are fan-less. I still find it hard to believe that an HDD is making that noise.

I dunno. I've never tried a Rosewill, relied on your opinion. The Antec's I've had were not what I'd call quiet even resting on an inch thick pad of foam. On a wooden shelf they were unbearable.

I was gonna suggest a dock. Never had one, but I've been impressed by the few posts I've seen about them. Think I'll buy one and try it. I'll let you know.

I just ordered this docking station. I think I read some positive posts about it.

so, this worked? i've had one of those wd dvr expanders pretty much since i first got directv, so i don't know how hot the HR is without it. i put the HR and the eSATA in different cabinet bays because with the eSATA sitting on top of the HR, it was very hot. even now, the HR is hotter than the eSATA.

if i can disconnect the internal drive of the HR, i should be able to save both power and heat, but i'd like to be reasonably sure it'll work before i crack it open.

Can you comment on if this encousire works or not when it arrives? I just found this for a review on newegg: To get the eSATA detected on your system is to first plug only in the eSATA cable then go to "Control Panel". Select "system", then the "hardware" tab, then "Device Manager". After that click "Action" and "Scan for new hardware". You have to do this every time if you plug this device in eSATA and it doesn't auto detect, which if you are not using a specific eSATA card that came with software and using the back ports on your motherboard like i am you will most likely have to do this.

Also just for an FYI, newegg is selling it for $36.99 and free shipping.

Just checking back in. 1TB WD My DVR Expander is recording close to 30 hours/week without issue with HR24.

I had one of this from last summer, working with 2.5" sata hd.
While i was working on my antec mx-1 and WD 2gb HD i tried it out.
    IT DOES WORK.
I however like my antec and just use the thermaltake for backup duty periodically on my desktop.

For info, Thermaltake also makes a dual HD model just like the single.
Haven't seen one of those but are available.

    It's poor solution - doesn'r support 2x1.5 or 2x2 GB. USB only :(

    Oh , found it.

    Thanks for the tips guys.
I just realized my FAP is still under warranty. I wonder what they'll send me when I send it back? Or OTOH, I suppose I could try to crack it open and put a new drive in there (although I hear it's a B* to open).
Hmm I might just go for the dock idea. Then it could pull double-duty on occasion.
It sounds like the reviewer is plugging the drive in after Windows has started up, which isn't triggering plug-and-play detection, so he has to initiate it manually. I'm going to bet that this (hopefully) wouldn't be an issue with a DVR, where the drive would be present from boot time.

    Thanks again!

Where there any problems with the dock? Such as noise? Or excessive vibration? Those issues are what prompted me to try the dock.

I think I remember one positive post about the Black Caviars. Kinda surprised that more folks haven't tried one. Don't remember ever seeing any other posts but that one.

I will comment on this thread when I get the dock. I just read thru a bunch of reviews on Amazon and I didn't see any that pertained to the HRs. Thankfully, doctor j has stated that he had one working with an HR.

Newegg is one of the companies that charges restocking fees. Amazon doesn't and if the dock is incompatible with the 24-500 and the WD EDVS 2TB HDD that I bought yesterday, I will just send it back and try another one. Here is a link to newegg's return policy. As you can see, the dock does fall into the "standard return policy" which triggers the restocking fee.

I'll throw my 2c in here. The dock is really, truly plug n play. You take a bare HDD and push it down through a "swinging door" into the dock where it plugs in exactly as when you plug one into an Antec MX-1 or a Rosewill, etc.

The main difference is that the bare HDD is 1/2 to 2/3 exposed(depending on the dock) and there are no screws to hold it in place(no need really).

So the noise is totally from the HDD and cooling is passive. There is no dust problem as with fans.

    Thanx, Fred.

I bought the 2TB EVDS HDD to go with it and, hopefully, that will be as quiet as my 2TB EADS are. Should be arriving tomorrow and I'm gonna put it on the 24-500. At least that will give me a reason for keeping the 24. :)

I've read some posts that said Seagate was giving them Xtremes for replacements for the FAPs. That might not be what you're looking for in a bedroom. I've never taken an FAP apart, but from what I've read, you're right, it is a PITA.

I'll be back on this thread tomorrow and tell everyone about my experience with the docking station and the EADS HDD being used on my 24-500. Why not wait until then? You can purchase smaller EVDS HDDs than the 2TB. And they should be quiet.

I received both the EVDS HDD and the docking station this afternoon. Took longer to get the boxes open than it did to install the docking station. So far, utter silence. Have watched a portion of a show that I recorded right away and both the dock and the HDD seem to be working properly. No need, so far, for the jumper to slow down the HDD to 1.5Mbs. I'll know for sure tonight when I watch the Yankees game.

Easiest eSATA I ever installed. Plug and play. No discernible noise at all. This would seem to be a perfect setup for a quiet bedroom.
