Is 612 OTA Tuner Still Deficient?

About 1 1/2 years ago I upgraded the living room TV to HD and got a 612, which had all the features I wanted but found the OTA tuner to be unacceptable compared to the HDTV tuner (swapped cable and got markedly different reception). After three replacements, I concluded that the 612 OTA tuner was a poor performer and got an upgrade to 622 at no cost. That was great until the Feb rate increase on HD Duo Receivers. Now I would consider downgrading my 622 to a 612 to reduce my bill but first would like to know if the OTA tuner performance is still poor (OTA tuner wasn't the only problem, but it was the show-stopper). Any feedback will be appreciated.

I have a question regarding my 722k, which I've had for a couple of months now. I noticed something last night while setting a recording in which the device did not behave as I expected.

I run my 722k in dual mode, with record plus activated and TV2 as the preference. When watching TV1 on my HDTV, if I invoke the guide and select a future program to record, upon completion it schedules the recording to TV2, which is what I expected.

However, when I went to my SDTV (TV2) last night, and invoked the guide and selected a program on Travel HD (ch 215) for recording, it also scheduled for TV2. I would have expected it to schedule on TV1. I had no other timer conflicts going that would have forced it to TV2.

The only solution I thought of would have been to wait until the program began, then started the recording and manually chose TV1 for the recording.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this how it's supposed to behave, or am I missing something in the setup? I would like to, when scheduling a future recording from the guide, be able to choose the tuner. Is this possible?

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

The Distant Networks catch-22 for new subscribers

I read some of the distant networks big thread, sorry if i missed this already being discussed. I find this situation completely intolerable and wonder if anyone else solved it with an insider contact or some such thing at DirecTV.

Background: before ordering, I called DirecTV customer service and asked if I could submit for DNS approval prior to being under contract. I was told 'yes'. A day or so later, I placed an order for new service and asked the same question again, and informed them that I would cancel the order if DNS approval was not given before installation/activation. Again I was told they could request the approval prior to activation.

Today I called customer service because their DNS request web page was not accepting my account #, and now they tell me that they can't submit for DNS approval until AFTER activation - AFTER I am already bound to the 2 year contract.

Both the big thread here and the DirecTV website suggests that I am eligible -there's no OTA reception and there's no CBS, NBC, nor CW already in the lineup, from anywhere. But I would like someone from DirecTV to go "on the record" about this before I'm bound to a 2 year contract.

So, is there any way to get this answer out of DirecTV prior to activation? At first one of two call centers I spoke with said that the installer could place the request upon activation, while in my home, but when I asked to speak to a local installer, they rescinded that claim. Now all they will say is that I have to ask the local affiliates. The closest CBS affiliate is over 100 miles away and I doubt they would ever see any such request.

I know I can always poll the neighbors, but I'd rather not be a nuisance if I don't have to be...

Thanks all.

slippery slope. directv doesn't know when to stop hiking up those rates. funny, I didn't get a raise this year and many lost their jobs and ESPN is justified to raise their rates by $1 a subscriber (or whatever it is)?

Great. I can't wait for the Communistcast/NBC deal to go through, then we'll pay twice that increase for NBC and USA.

Is it possible to suspend your account with E for like 6 months? Only reason why i had dish was for comcast for cubs but now with I phone i can get the games on audio at MLB so dont see need for dish-and we love the radio guys they make the game fun. I just dont think it's worth having dish for one channel. I realize i wont have Sirius but cable uses music choice. Would appreciate any suggestions. Cable also said they would buy out the rest of my contract if i go that route and put the credit on my acct- Max.

OK, here is one to file in the WTH just happened category. Turned on the TV to watch the news last evening, and everything is working fine. After a few minutes I notice the receiver (HR20-100) is totally unresponsive to the remote (RF setup). It is not the batteries as the remote still worked for the TV & audio receiver, but I changed them anyway with no luck. Did every manner of reboot (RBR & unplug), still nothing. No buttons at all on the remote will work.

I go to the bedroom and the HR22-100 is working fine, so I set that one up in the living room. It is OK for a few minutes then its remote (RF) just stops working like the other one.:eek2: I go back to the bedroom and setup the HR20-100, and it still is totally unresponsive to the remote. So now both receivers are stuck on one channel, and I can't even turn them off without unplugging.

I notice the front buttons on the receiver are working, so I go in and reset the remote codes back to as delivered with IR on the HR22-100, and it still doesn't work. At that point I didn't have the energy to spend two hours on the phone with DirecTV, so I decided I would just call in the morning.

About an hour later I was in the bedroom and just punched the remote for the heck of it, and it was now working. I go into the LR and the HR22-100 is still not working. Just for the fun of it I go back to the front buttons to change the remote back to RF, punch the number codes in with the remote that isn't working, and everything comes back to life working just fine.

So WTH happened? My first thought was the Russians or Chinese had set off an EM pulse, but that couldn't be it as everything else was still working. Any thoughts in case it happens again?

ps: I have the remotes marked, so I didn't get them mixed up.

Question and Answer Time:

Question: New 211k Receiver, can I make this a DVR?
Answer: Yes, available today, 50GB - 1TB. One Time Fee.

Question: I have a portable Dish 500 Antenna can I use this with my 211k?
Answer: Yes, just be aware without the 129 location you will miss some channels, lots of HD is on 129.

Question: I get freeze frame from wind and ice, anything to take care of this?
Answer: Really it's the clouds/thunderheads, rain might do a little. Check your alignment to make sure it's peaked.

Question: How do I get a new remote?
Answer: Online Support at www.dishnetwork.com. Or give them a call and they can help you as well, 888-333-3474.

Question: Are their free movies and shows on Dish on Demand?
Answer: Yes, access Dish Online and their is some TV entertainment that is free.

Question: Talked about True Volume in the past, is that here yet? And can you activate it?
Answer: That will be in releases that come out in March in the ViP models and will be automatic.

Question: I have no active phone lines can I use my WiFi network?
Answer: Yes, if you have a game adapter you can connect it via ethernet to the STB. Another option is a Homeplug to Ethernet adapter and plug it into an outlet next to your router and run a cat-5 cable to your router.

Question: I would like to add my WD Passport 500GB drive to my receiver?
Answer: Yes (Commentary: I think this may be wrong since the passport is a self powered drive and they haven't worked int the past, take this answer with a grain of salt).

Question: Getting pop-ups on my screen, things changing, how do I fix?
Answer: IR Interference, change your remote to a different address than one

Question: Is there a Dish Network magazine that I can subscribe to?
Answer: Yes, information is at dishentertainmentmag.com. You can also get online programming information at dishnetwork.com

Question: I have a DP34 and 2 DVRs, can I add a 3rd receiver?
Answer: If it's a dual tuner DVR you'd need to add a second DP34 switch

Hi everyone and thanks for your help,

I currently have a cable modem and wireless router upstairs in my house, but I would like to bring it downstairs for a number of reason. I want to set up in my entertainment center and hook it up by splitting/diplexing the cable going to my DISH receiver. I am very unexperienced in these type of matters and would love some help in getting this done correctly!

My dish receiver = VIP 722 DVR - Provides full HD service for my downstairs HDTV and standard definition for an upstairs TV

Currently, the cable comes from the wall, then diplexes (I think) twice as it hooks into the receiver. Here are pictures of the current wiring:

This is the first diplex

This is the 2nd diplex

This is where everything plugs in to the back of the receiver. The VHF/UHF cable from the 1st diplex plugs into the "Home Distribution" slot, The SAT cable from the 1st diplex then diplexes into the "Satellite 1 & 2" cables, which plug into their respective slots.

Here is a very poor diagram

wall cable------Diplex 1>>>>Home Distribution
....................................>>>>Diplex 2>>>>>>Satellite 1
.................................................. .......>>>>>>Satellite 2

My instinct is that I should be able to do this:
wall cable------Diplex 1>>>>NEW DIPLEX>>>>>Home Distribution
.................................................. ..............>>>>>Cable Modem
....................................>>>>Diplex 2>>>>>>Satellite 1
.................................................. .......>>>>>>Satellite 2

Would that work? What kind of Diplex should I use? Or should I used a splitter?

Please help! If anything needs clarification, just respond and let me know.

Thanks!

PS - If these pictures look humongous, I apologize, I don't know how to fix that!

Signal Meter / Satellite Number Questions

I have a question about signal strength, which satellite a channel is receiving the signal, and the signal meter. I have been assuming a few things that hopefully someone can confirm or set me straight.

When you goto a certain channel, press info twice, you will see in the upper left corner a satellite number. This is the satellite that the channel is receiving the signal from correct?
When you goto a certain channel, then go to the signal meter (menu-6-1-1), this meter is testing the signal for the specific satellite and transponder/spotbeam for that channel correct?
This only applies if my assumptions are correct. I have 2 vip622 receivers. If I goto a TV for receiver 1, do one of the above, goto a TV for receiver 2 (and the same channel), shouldn't they show the same satellite # if everything was setup properly?

Reason why I am asking, is I noticed for my local Fox HD channel (and other local hd) will show up on 129 with a puny signal of around 20 whereas as the other receiver will show it at 61.5 with a much better signal around 80. I always have signal issues with rain and recently snow. It seems like one of the receivers looses the signal more quickly and I am wondering if this is a clue why.
