Confirmed: You must signup for HD Extra Pack, 3 Months Free

DirecTV has confirmed that on 12/15 you WILL have to re-signup for the HD Extra Pack.

There is an extremely small percentage of people that will NOT have to signup for it. And as it was explained to us, the percentage is very small that it is safe to say that "everyone" will have to signup again.

Also... the 3 Months of HD-Extra pack IS valid, so basically when you sign up today... you will have it free until your April 2008 bill.

You can add HD-Extra pack via www.directv.com or calling 1-800-DirecTV

Will the 3 months free be valid if you sign up online or will you have to call in to get this?

I tried to sign up on line yesterday and couldn't. I emailed Directv and their reply stated that I had to wait until the 15th to add it on to my package. I'm not understanding why I couldn't add it before it gets cut off?

Right now, the cost shows online as "$0.00/3 months free". You need to click "extra info" to see the $4.99 price.

Earl, do you know if the three months started when you add it to your package, or on the 15th?

I am not sure, which day it starts on.

But it is about $0.17 a day

For the entire package of 6 channels, or approximately 3¢ per day per channel.

Given that, I will probably sign up for this again ...

Just signed up for it online no problem.

Now that we've come this far in all these new HD channels, why go backwards...

In the big picture of things $4.99 won't break the bank...and I suspect they'll add more to this package over time as well.

Who DOESN'T have to sign up to get these channels? Earl, are you suggesting that some are grandfathered?

Well, I'm apparently one of Earl's "extremely small percentage", 'cause when I got to the page, the extra pack was still checked. Interestingly, the checkbox wasn't grayed like all the other services I already have, so I unchecked it and re-checked it just to be sure. On the summary page it said I've got it with 3 months free, so I'm a happy camper. Thanks for the heads up Earl.

I think he was implying some people who already signed up for the package would not need to again and that number is so small he is telling anyone who wants the package to sign up again.

One question: when does the three months free coundown start? Is it December 15th? I signed up maybe a month and a half ago. Did my three free months start then? I sure hope not.

I am really going to have to look at my account now. With my at&t discount in jeopardy and this $5 bump, I am getting to close to a buck fifty a month.
I may drop the premier package and ala carte 1 or more movie channels.
If you take away movies that I buy on dvd anyway, the only program I can think of that I watch on them now is Dexter.
With the writers strike, I think I can assume there will be a huge lull in original programming anyhow.
Heck it might even be cheaper to wait for the original programs to come out on dvd the following year.

addendum: I signed up for the $4.99 and did not change my package. $30 a month difference to grow down and if I want any 1 movie selection, half that. Just not enough savings to do it. Man they really got me by the short hairs.

What is to stop someone from signing up, taking the 3 months free, then droping it in April?

What if we sign after the 15th? Will we still get the 3 free months? Or is that only if you sign up before the 15th?

I personally waited to wait and see how much I miss those channels before signing up.

They can have it for five bucks a month. My bill is high enough and there isn't any compelling programming on these channels anyway. IMO
