I suspect eventually we *might* see WABM in HD, but WUOA has no HD programming at all, so it would be a total waste for DirecTV to put it up in HD, unless they decided to eventually switch Birmingham to all MPEG-4 (and with the SD locals being on 101, I highly highly doubt that would happen)
|
There's a test channel for WABM HD up. Never any way of knowing when they'll turn those on, though.

I appreciate everyone who has put up with my whining over the last year or so about locals in Missoula. Now if D12 will fire up (looks like its delayed again), everyone else can get HD Locals.

So D12 satellite is the key? If so, at least that gives me ammo for intelligent questioning purposes.

Just noticed in the Guide channel 23-2 WCVEDT-DT,23 (PBS) in Richmond Virginia. It looks like we may be getting PBSHD. The problem is that PBSHD is on channel 23-1. 23-2 broadcasts in 480i even though the guide has HD. Would hate to see this opportunity pass by. Could they have picked the wrong channel by mistake?

Usually that means they're going to carry both -1 and -2 in SD. In the past, local PBS stations have reported that DirecTV gives them an option between carrying the HD channel or carrying two subchannels. Since 23-1 isn't just an HD simulcast of 23-2, perhaps WCVE was given this option and chose for DirecTV to carry both in SD rather than the HD version of the main channel.
This is merely speculation on my part.

Its really weird. The programs in the guide match the programs on the 23-1 OTA HD channel. The actual show that is on is the same as the SD channel 23 which is actually 23-2 OTA. Looks like they only mirrored the SD channel we already receive from D*. The info on the channel has English DD which is always an HD channel. If I call a CSR, will they even know what I am talking about?

Bizarre. That sounds like what happened with WKMJ in Louisville KY a few weeks back. Just a mirror on the -2 channel. I don't know if a CSR will have any knowledge of what's going on, but perhaps they would know who to make aware of the issue? I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I just noticed 23-2 tonight and came here for the scoop. I also noticed 480i, which tempered my excitement.

Looks like all they did was mirror the channel 23 we already have. The audio is English DD which is always an HD channel. Should be 23-1. That is the HD channel OTA. I think I am going to call and see what I can find out. Seems like a waste right now.

It's official, someone screwed up. In the Local Channel Lookup for 23838 it has PBS channel WCVE2 23-2 as HD channel 23. It.s not HD. This channel is and always had been broadcast in 480i. It doesn't even have the HD flag on the shows in the guide. Channel 23-1 is the 1080i channel. Can anyone in here direct me in the right direction?

Look in the "Affiliate" column. It clearly says "WCVE2". I know it may be confusing, but DirecTV uses the "HD" column to designalte MPEG4 SD subchannels-otherwise they'd have to have another column for a relatively few stations when spread out over their 150 plus markets. That's why I've gone to designating the MPEG4 SD only channels with a yellow background.

Understood. It's just a MPEG4 SD channel of a channel we already have in another format. Guess I'll keep my antenna hooked up to get the HD version. Thanks for the quick response.

It still doesn't make any sense to me why they list it as 23-2 if that's not what is shown on 23-2 OTA.

It does match 23-2 OTA. 23-2 is not the HD channel. It just doesn't make any sense to add this channel. I now have three channels broadcasting the same exact thing. I think the channel 23 via satellite is actually is 23-2. The shows in the guide on channel 23 always did match 23-2 OTA. They do not always match 23-1. I have always noticed this even before this addition.
23 - via Satellite
23-2 - via Satellite
23-2 - OTA
23-1 is the actual HD channel. The shows on this channel are different than the other 3.

If your TV station thinks that HD means How Drunk they are when trying to figure out aspect ratios...you might be a redneck.

You laugh, but it really is that pathetic. Back before the HD feed launched, I saw SD programs stretched (with the ends cut off the 4:3 picture), HD programs cropped that same way with the APT logo half off the screen, but also HD and SD programs displayed properly, too. Then every now and then we get a 4:3 program squeezed within the 4:3 box so it's extra skinny. I mean really, I have no idea how they managed to get to this spot.
The only difference having the HD feeds makes is seeing the full 16:9 picture now. That and the APT and CW feeds are now a glitchy, brrrip-y mess. Hopefully that'll settle down after a while but right now APT is the glitchiest channel in the entire lineup.

I called Directv about PBS. You might want to do the same. I asked to speak to a tech.

I'm sure it will get covered eventually as we do have SD channels on DTV. It's just extremely frustrating the way the govt and DTV have it set up. I lived in DMA #6 before I moved here and was getting all the DMA #6 channels fine even after I moved until I had to get a new receiver activated and they updated my status. My designated NBC station for my DMA is 43 miles from me. The DMA #6 NBC station is 24 miles away, but I am not allowed to have it. DMA #6 has ABC, my DMA does not. DTV carries DMA #6 ABC in my DMA as an SD channel. The HD signal for that station is on the satellite, but I am not allowed to have it, only the SD version. They do allow me to get the HD ABC feed from LA though. My local DMA Fox is closer than the one in DMA #6, though it is still 43 miles away.
I REALLY do not care about my local versions of the networks as I have not watched local news on purpose in over 20 years and they are not really local to me anyway. They are 40+ miles away over a mountain ridge in another county. They are only my local channels because the govt and the local politicians say so.
