Does that really say 'Tivo receivers' in the ad? Are they dating again?

Let's hope that means the HR10-250's will also receive this upgrade.

This is going to be one of DirecTV's favorite new features for those of us who travel.

Does this require that the HR20 be connected to my wireless network? I plan to do that, but that's one of those "when I get a round TUIT" things.

No, remote booking will not requre a network connection to your DVRs

From what I know of in the CE portion, your receiver does NOT have the be networked, I believe DirecTV sends the record command down from the birds themselves. So, that's good news to a lot of people!

Does this mean the DVR has to have Internet access or will the request to record be sent to the DVR via the satellite? Brochure doesn't say anything about the recorder being required to have Internet access.

No Internet access required for the DVR. The Remote Booking signal is sent to the DVR via the satellite.

Really, I figured this would be part of the Internet connection on the HR2Xs

Very surprising...

Disregard. Between the time I wrote and posted this message, I see that Earl answered the question. Oh the joys of being interrupted at work when one is trying to surf the net.

So, DTV is using satellite bandwith and not charging the DVR customers for remote booking?

Wouldn't it be "cheaper" to use the ethernet port and have users use an internet connection to do the remote booking?

Other random thoughts:

I would rather network my HD DVR as I live in Texas and would not want "rain fade" to interfere with my remote bookings. Even when my power goes out, my UPS keeps my PC going and my DSL connection.

I have only had my HR21 for 2 weeks and haven't fully played with the settings, but I did notice the ethernet ports on the unit and was looking at connecting it to my home network if it was possible.

My guess is almost certainly not.

Because using the Internet connection for remote booking means that:

1) Only HR20/HR21 receivers could do Remote Booking. None of the R15's, or TiVo devices, have built-in Ethernet ports.
2) DirecTV would have to field all sorts of questions about getting those receivers networked.
3) Lots o' service calls.

There are portions of the satellite bandwidth dedicated to 'housekeeping' functions (i.e. authorizations, etc.) I'm sure Remote booking is basically just using some of that.

So, would this require a "call home" around 2 am to "reset" or activate things, or will this happen "on the fly"? Meaning, I get to work and remember to schedule something that starts in 15 minutes and it WILL record?

No call home either. The satellite bandwidth necessary to send a message to your DVR is all of a few bytes, compare that to the bazillions they send all the time for a channel itself.

Yes, you can hit record online and in a few seconds the DVR will start recording in front of you.

Cheers,
Tom
