It looks like G4 HD is coming very soon!
I haven't posted here in such a long time, but thought I'd stop by to share something odd I found in the guide this evening. I did some searching throughout the forum to make sure this topic hasn't already been brought up, and didn't find much. If I'm wrong, however, feel free to redirect me to the appropriate thread.
That being said, I was looking through the guide to set "The Onion Movie" on G4 (channel 310) to record for this Wednesday night at 7pm. When I saw it, there was an HD flag next to the title! I thought this was particularly bizarre since it was showing up on an SD channel. After looking at some of its upcoming programs, I also found a few others with HD tags, starting with "The Host", which I believe airs Tuesday at 11pm. I'm not sure if this is a mistake or if we are actually getting G4 HD early this week, but I did want to pass this information along.
I also realized that "Attack of the Show!" will not be aired this week. Instead movies are being played all week at its 7pm timeslot. Could this be for the construction of an HD set? Who knows?!

If I am not mistaken.. when the syndication rights for "Lost" were sold, SciFi bought HD rights and G4 didn't.
In any event, Neal Tiles, President of G4, in February had this to say about HD...
"We do currently offer our G4 channel in a version of HD. That is we are upconverting our signal and hope to transition our full schedule to true HD later this year"
Sounds like "pretend HD" to me.... another channel in HD, that has nothing to broadcast in HD? I wouldn't be looking to see this any time soon. If you were DirecTV would you choose G4 over other channels that are ready to actually do HD?
Keep in mind, a channel like the Travel Channel, which many people have expressed the desire to have in HD doesn't do "studio based" shows and as such does need a bunch of expensive HD cameras and studio equipment. G4 would need all of that to do the many shows they broadcast from their studios.
Sounds like a Guide screw up to me.

Man oh man oh man oh man! To this day, G4's buyout of TechTV strikes a serious nerve with me. Best I can tell, they did it as a means of buying their way into wider distribution. They "merge" the two channels together under the moniker g4TechTV, meanwhile they were canceling 90% of TechTV's shows, firing 90% of the cast and crew, closing the San Fran studios, etc. etc. etc. TechTV was a viable channel that I enjoyed watching. G4 is one of those channels that I can't bring myself to eliminate from my FAV list, even though I spend less than 60 minutes a year watching.
I miss Leo, Patrick, Yoshi, Kevin, Sarah, and the rest. I know they're available all over the net, but its not the same. |

It could be that G4 is going HD on the 1st, but Direct may not be carrying the HD broadcast at that time, especially considering that they listed HD programming on the SD station. More than likely a guide data mistake.

G4 has been broadcasting in HD since early December '08 and has only been available in select Comcast markets up until this point. This is just so strange seeing HD tags on an SD channel.

Great. I'll never watch G4. I want WGN America HD for my Cubs Baseball games this coming up season. I could care less about G4 or whatever the heck the channel is.

Like many people here, I enjoyed Leo's show, but sadly there weren't enough of us watching. G4 has gone for a bigger audience with reruns like Lost, Cops, Heroes, etc. SciFi (soon to be SyFy) is doing the same thing - watering down the brand focus to get more eyeballs and more ad dollars.
I don't watch G4, but for those that do, going HD would be great. Some of their gaming shows would probably look great in HD.
