Talking When a 13-year-old From 2009 Uses a Walkman For a Week

From the BBC:

Giving up my iPod for a Walkman
Quote:
When the Sony Walkman was launched, 30 years ago this week, it started a revolution in portable music. But how does it compare with its digital successors? The Magazine invited 13-year-old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman for a week.

I actually saw a guy using an old school walkman the other day. It was not quite as large as the first one, but it was by no means one of the late 80s slim models either. Made me remember back when I thought that was the coolest thing in the world. Man, I remember those things sucking down batteries.

I was at RadioShack the other day, and I can't remember if it was a true Sony Walkman or a RS branded version, but they had a few portable audio cassette players for sale. I was shocked. I had one Walkman, it died after a few years then I bought a Philips.

I was growing up more with the Discman than the walkman... I remember getting a new discman before the 1996(?) Lutheran Youth National Convention in St. Louis and it had like 35 second skip technology... I was the dude who could (lightly) play drums on his CD player without it skipping... man was I cool!

I grew up on cassettes. I got my first CD in 1997. Although I never had a cassette Walkman (I'd love to have that first gen one) I did have portable cassette am/fm radios. Even had dual deck boomboxes with High Speed dubbing. Oh the days before the net. When music that I wanted to take on the go but couldn't buy I'd spend hours waiting to hear the song on the radio to record it. I got my first portable CD player in 1999 (wow 10 years ago) and still have it. (see pic) I've fixed it a few times. AM/FM with an amazing 20 sec anti-skip. By the way I'm 24 .

My first Walkman was the yellow "Sport" version with the FM tuner c. 1983. Hated the ear buds that came with it, so I used regular headphones. Used it while running. Made a tape with Red Rider's Lunatic Fringe that repeated itself over and over. Great running music.

I think I had one of those also. Did it have the headband earphones that had the transducer at a 90 degree angle so they went straight into your ear?
