Press Release: DISH Network is the Exclusive Sat. TV Partner of the Prof. Bull Riders

DISH Network® is the Exclusive Satellite TV Partner of The Professional Bull Riders, Inc.

NEW YORK and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Oct. 7, 2009
– The Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR) and DISH Network, L.L.C., a subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH), announced today that DISH Network will be the Official Satellite Television Partner of the PBR. The partnership includes exclusive satellite TV sponsorship of the PBR’s remaining 2009 BFTS stops and the 2009 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals as well as all events on the 2010 BFTS tour which will be available to satellite TV subscribers only on DISH Network.

“Millions of PBR fans are deeply concerned about the uncertain future of VERSUS’ availability on DirecTV,” said Randy Bernard, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the PBR. “We have heard from tens of thousands of them and have been working diligently to provide options and alternatives.

DISH Network is not only committed to carrying VERSUS coverage of PBR events well into the future, they are making an investment in the fans of the sport. They have expressed a genuine desire to earn the trust and loyalty of PBR fans by providing more content, not less, and incentivizing PBR fans for choosing their service.”

“DISH Network is proud to offer the most complete coverage of professional bull riding events in satellite TV, including every broadcast of the Built Ford Tough Series in high definition,” said Ira Bahr, Chief Marketing Officer for DISH Network. “We recognize the devotion PBR fans have to the sport of bull riding, which is why all of our customers are receiving VERSUS, the home of PBR, for free with DISH Network through the month of November.”

DISH Network’s sponsorship of the PBR will span all regular-scheduled events on the PBR’s elite Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) tour including all of the 2009 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals. Fans will enjoy access to new and enhanced services on www.pbrnow.com such as real-time online scoring, a live blog and chat, and behind-the-scenes podcasts from each event featuring the most popular riders on tour. Additionally, “PBR Now” – a new weekly PBR news program – will be available on RFD-TV every Thursday, giving PBR fans the opportunity to keep up with their favorite riders and events.

New DISH Network customers will enjoy a special offer when they order today by calling 1-888-538-8459 and mentioning the code “PBR.”

I know this is Charlie taking advantage the DirecTV-Versus problem, but:

Millions of professional bull riding fans???? Heard from tens of thousands??? I can think of another term involving "bull" that I would apply here.

Actually, those who don't know much about PBR, you would be VERY surprised how popular PBR really is. How much money is involved, and how international the appeal is, and believe it or not, how international the riders are.
Rodeo is still popular enough that colleges still have Rodeo Scholarships. If nothing else if you have never watched, turn it on and root for the Bull.
Granted as a Steer wrestler growing up, I would prefer to see more Roping and Wrestling, but the Bulls are what drives the show nowadays, and brings in the CASH.

Well, they do apparently get over 1.7 million attendees per year to their live events and they do claim a viewership of 100 million worldwide. And it's likely you can find 10-20,000 fans of almost any sport that are passionate enough to call a provider on it.

I'm not surprised, more people call about Vs. because of bull riding than hockey, tour de France and Indycar racing combined. Not saying they have more fans necessarily but I know they have more fans that are willing to pick up the phone and change their service provider.

Well, this is all new to me. I grew up going to rodeos and we even have a CCPRA rodeo every year during Frontier Days here in Willits. But I was unaware that bull riding had become that popular. I always viewed it as a perversion of skilled horsemanship. There's no reason a sane person would ride a bull on a working ranch.

YOU are VERY,VERY,VERY,VERY CORRECT, that its a Perversion. No way you could get the money, or fan base for Roping, Steer wrestling, or even Bronco Riding.
PBR is Bronco busting on steriods, and draws in fans of Rodeo and people who know nothing about Rodeo at all.
Skill riding events just aren't so David vs Goliath, nor EXTREME.

It's a smart move on Dish's part because it's rather popular. I watch it once in a while.

Got it. The EXTREME rodeo sport. Can't draw a crowd unless there's a reasonably good chance of watching someone get killed or maimed.

I haven't had a PBR in years. Usually when I go to the bar I'll have a Bud Light or a Corona.

Very true Grumpy. Growing up around rodeo as well( I'm a team roper), people were always excited to see the bulls for that extreme factor. However, the claims are probably, as most have pointed out, a little lopsided. We recently went to the PBR event in Ontario, CA held @ Citizen's Bank Arena, a venue that can hold ~ 10-15K people, and the place was half empty. There was another rodeo going on that same weekend (San Bernardino Sheriff's rodeo) and more people were there in a smaller venue. Numbers can be distorted.

Oh well...

Versus is in HD already for Hockey, College Football, WEC Wreckage, PBR, UFL Football, and some decent hunting shows too.
NEVER watch a movie though on VS or any other commercial Cable channel, way to much editing.
